Children Who Witness Domestic Violence May Suffer Long-term Difficulties

Domestic violence can have profound and lasting effects on children who witness it, even if they are not direct targets of the abuse.

DCFS reports that children exposed to domestic violence often experience emotional, psychological and behavioral challenges. They may feel fear, confusion, guilt, or even blame themselves for the violence. Over time, witnessing such trauma can lead to anxiety, depression, and difficulties in forming healthy relationships. The long-term impact can affect their sense of security and self-worth, sometimes perpetuating a cycle of violence in their own adult relationships if left unaddressed.

Professional Growth Leads to Better Outcomes

Congratulations to Shelter, Inc.'s Residential Director, Caitlyn Lierman, who recently became a Licensed Social Worker (LSW) after earning her master's degree in social work. Continuing professional education puts Shelter staff at the forefront of child welfare practices, mental health therapy and case management. The smarter and more experienced we are as a staff, the better we are able to help our young people live to their fullest potential.

Christine%20Roerig%2C%20PCM.png

We are thrilled to welcome Christine Roerig to Shelter's leadership team. Christine focused on communications in her studies and has more than 11 years of marketing and communications experience, the majority of which has been spent in the nonprofit sector. She has been familiar with Shelter’s work for quite a few years and was very excited to join the team in September. Communications strategy is a passion of hers and she is thrilled to bring her passion and experience to Shelter, Inc.

Good Happens When You Give

Transitional Living Program
We are so proud to share that all six residents living at this Shelter home are gainfully employed and working towards independent living. This two-year voluntary program helps residents achieve self-sufficiency and these residents are on their way!

Jennings Emergency Shelter
Shelter staff helped one of our young residents look and feel her best for her high school Homecoming dance. It is so important to our staff to create special moments and memories for youth who are experiencing challenging life situations.

Youth Experiencing Homelessness Program
Being responsive and compassionate are hallmarks of our Shelter staff. One of the teens in our program shared that she was commuting to her job on foot, walking nearly 2 hours each day! Our caseworker took immediate action, obtained and repaired a donated bike and shortened his client's roundtrip journey to 40 minutes.
