What Does Being an Advocate Mean to You?

As the mom of an adult living with a disability advocacy means using my voice filled with passion, lived experience, and conviction to take action to create change! In both my professional and private life, I speak up to help address problems of inequality in both funding and services for individuals living with intellectual/developmental disabilities. My life’s work is to ensure that every individual has the option to live, love and laugh in their community!

Team Mom forever…

"To me, advocacy means learning to find your voice and supporting others to do the same – especially those whose voices are likely to be drowned out by the noise of the crowd. In a literal sense, it can mean communicating to others the importance of certain policies, or your opinion on things, or even meeting with your legislators. In a metaphorical sense, it can mean moving the needle toward positive change or creating small ripples of impact in your community. Advocacy is not an inherent skill – it takes practice and gusto. But with the support of one another, we can accomplish great things!"

- Annie Bruno, LCSW, QIDP, Ligas Family Advocate Central & Southern Illinois at The Arc of Illinois
