Dear Community Members,
We’ve all been witnesses and too many have experienced the total devastation caused throughout Southern California by the numerous wildfires. The cost to people in cherished memories and loved ones, homes, businesses, and places of worship lost goes well beyond anything anyone could ever have imagined. I watch and read the news and feel a sense of deep sadness within my body.
“You feel helpless,” said actress and singer Joci Scott, 26, a wheelchair-user in North Hollywood. “Evacuation procedures usually forget people with disabilities. It’s a lot more difficult for us.”
Many disabled people don’t drive or have access to a vehicle. Others fear getting mired in gridlock and burning alive in their cars.
“We saw a couple days ago, a lot of people had to leave their cars and run for their lives,” which is not an option for some with disabilities, said Serra Rea, Disability Disaster Access and Resources program manager with the California Foundation for Independent Living.
Ultimately, inclusion ― on both a systemic and individual level ―matters most.
“I really think it’s important that people with disabilities be at the table making some of the decisions that impact our lives,” said Hector M. Ramirez, Disability Rights California board member, “because when it doesn’t happen … a lot of the work falls short.”
As you might know we lost members of the disability community in the fires.
Anthony Mitchell, Sr. a great-grandfather and Mitchell family patriarch was an amputee who used a wheelchair. His son Justin Mitchell had cerebral palsy and needed help to get out of bed. They couldn’t escape on their own, and relatives said firefighters stopped them from entering the evacuation zone
Rory Sykes, was a Child Disabilities Advocate and Media Personality, who died at 32. "Rory was born blind with cerebral palsy & had difficulty walking," his mother said." He overcame so much with surgeries & therapies to regain his sight & to be able to learn to walk. Despite the pain, he still enthused about traveling the world with me from Africa to Antarctica. Rory was a sought-after inspirational speaker for [Tony Robbins] when he was only 8 years old." He was also a child star on the TV show Kiddy Kappers.
All of us at SoCal Adaptive Sports hope that those in need due to this recent tragedy will be able to recover. We are indebted to the work of the people who fight fires and save lives and public officials, giving selflessly of themselves. This newsletter is dedicated to all of them, but also to the memories of those who have passed, especially to Anthony, Justin and Rory. If you are able, please donate to help those suffering from the fires.
We continue to have a lot going on. This includes Special Needs Hockey lessons starting in February, which is in collaboration with the Berger Foundation Iceplex. We also have our Friendship Dance in collaboration with UCPIE. Last, we also collaborate with Olive Tree OT on February 15th-29th, people have already registered!
Please register for our ongoing activities and also other special activities such as our terrific hiking program, in collaboration with Friends of the Desert Mountains and golf at Desert Willow. Look for other special activities throughout 2025.

“Te sientes impotente,” dijo la actriz y cantante Joci Scott, de 26 años, usuaria de silla de ruedas en North Hollywood. “Los procedimientos de evacuación generalmente olvidan a las personas con discapacidad. Para nosotros es mucho más difícil.”
