Congress is on the brink of driving us to a government shutdown!
Congress must pass a temporary funding measure, known as a continuing resolution or CR, to fund the government by September 30th. A CR is needed because Congress has not passed spending bills for the next fiscal year, beginning October 1st.
A government shutdown would be extremely detrimental to all sectors of the economy and harmful those receiving food assistance. Seven million mothers, infants and children are in danger of losing WIC benefits. Further, 41 million people relying on SNAP may only be able to count on benefits through October. Food banks would see greater demands for food during a shutdown. Meals on Wheels, providing meals to vulnerable seniors, would be compromised, potentially causing reductions in meal services, extending existing waiting lists or shutdowns.
We need Congress to take immediate action to avoid these impacts to millions of food insecure people in the U.S. Representatives and Senators need to work to avoid a harmful shutdown and pass a temporary funding measure this week to continue funding for critical anti-hunger programs.
