Welcome back to our exciting annual newsletter series, "Celebrating Changemakers: Honoree Spotlight." In this series, we embark on a journey through the lives and accomplishments of extraordinary individuals who have made a lasting impact on our community and beyond. Each week, we will shine a well-deserved spotlight on one honoree, revealing their inspiring journey, their contributions, and the indelible mark they've left on the world. Concluding this year’s Honoree Spotlight Series, we recognize Louis Lien, an entrepreneur and thinker whose journey of transformation and impact reminds us how vision, courage, and compassion can shape a better tomorrow.

FROM RESILIENCE TO GENEROSITY:

LOUIS LIEN, President of USA Sports, Inc.

A TOUGH START IN PURSUIT OF EDUCATION

Louis Lien’s journey began in the countryside of Taiwan, where he was raised in a large family with limited resources. His parents were educators who believed in the power of learning and sent Louis to the city for a better education. But for Louis, the transition was anything but smooth. Away from his family, Louis faced bullying and isolation in a harsh school environment.

“I was a country boy who went to a big city,” he recalled. “Everyone else already had friends; I was singled out.”

The turning point came in high school when he met a compassionate classmate who took him under his wing. With this support, Louis found the stability to focus on his studies and eventually earned a coveted spot in college—a feat achieved by only a small percentage of students at the time.

FROM TOUR GUIDE TO TRADE STAR

Louis’s college journey began with a major in mathematics, pursued during a time when emerging computer technologies were beginning to reshape the world. But it was a summer job as Taiwan’s youngest English-speaking tour guide that truly changed his trajectory. The role allowed him to interact with people from around the world and sharpen his communication skills. This exposure laid the foundation for his entry into international trade.

By his late twenties, he was exporting products to major corporations such as General Electric, GNC, and Germany’s largest department store. At the height of his success, he was shipping 30 to 40 containers a month and earning national recognition for his contributions to Taiwan’s economy. But with visibility came vulnerability. When local mafia groups attempted to extort him, Louis made a life-altering decision: he left Taiwan and came to the United States in search of safety and a fresh start.

A NEW CHAPTER IN HOUSTON

Arriving in Houston to collect unpaid invoices, Louis found himself unexpectedly becoming part-owner of a company through stock compensation. Though he hadn’t planned to start a business in the U.S., circumstances led him to establish USA Sports Inc. in 1987. Drawing on his experience and passion for fitness, Louis built a company that would go on to win multiple industry awards, including the National Sporting Goods Association’s (NSGA’s) Top Free-Weight Accessory Supplier Award and Taiwan’s National Award for Small and Medium-Sized Businesses. His business philosophy was simple yet profound: “It has to be win-win for all parties. Otherwise, nothing will be long-term.”

A PHILOSOPHER AT HEART

Beyond business, Louis is a deep thinker—a man who ponders the nature of civilization, the ethics of consumption, and the mysteries of the universe. He speaks passionately about quantum physics, the vastness of galaxies, and the idea of evolving humanity toward a more harmonious existence. “If everybody could see the bigger picture, the world would become a better place,” he mused, reflecting on the fragility of life and the importance of empathy.

GRATITUDE, FAMILY, AND GIVING BACK

Despite the pain and challenges he has faced, Louis considers himself blessed. He credits his wife, Jessica, for being his steadfast partner through every chapter. Together, they now enjoy RV camping adventures across North America, and most recently to the redwoods of Northern California. Louis is also a proud father to two sons, Max and TC, who are on their own journeys of self-discovery.

Louis’ commitment to giving back to his community is unwavering. He served two terms on the Board of Trustees of United Way of Greater Houston, where he helped with setting strategic direction, overseeing finances and operations, and serving as a public advocate for its mission.  He also was a major supporter of both of the Chinese Community Center’s capital campaigns and was the lead sponsor of the project to renovate a 3,600-square-foot storage building on CCC’s property into a climate-controlled recreation center in order to expand senior health and wellness programs.

As we gather next Thursday at River Oaks Country Club for our 2025 Luncheon, A United Vision: Shaping Tomorrow Together, we are honored to celebrate individuals like Louis Lien, whose life story embodies resilience, transformation, and generosity. His journey from hardship to global success and his unwavering commitment to community reflect the very spirit of shaping a better tomorrow. Louis reminds us that when we see the bigger picture and act with purpose, we can build legacies of hope, health, and humanity.
