The Science & Politics of Temptation
Why is even the most colorful bowl of salad less enticing than salty chips or gooey mac and cheese? In June, our Plant Powered Book Club will gather virtually to discuss Michael Moss’s latest book, Hooked: Food, Free Will, and How the Food Giants Exploit Our Addictions in which Moss reveals the science of addiction and the lengths the processed food manufacturers go to feed our unhealthy habits.
“Wrestling free of an addiction requires us to give something up that came to define our lives, and then fend off forever the myriad of temptations that try to reel us back in. This only gets harder with eating, where enticement is the calculated business of those who sell processed food. They have nearly boundless resources in knowing our vulnerabilities. But now we know about them, too, and we know more about us, which can change the dynamics of our dealings with food.” (p. 211)
Then, learn more about the psychology of food addiction and proactive strategies for creating healthy habits during our conversation with the authors of The Pleasure Trap, Doug Lisle, PhD, and Alan Goldhamer, DC in July. Register here.
