March is National Nutrition Month – a perfect complement to our anniversary! As the country shines a spotlight on the importance of nutrition, the message is often more confusing than it needs to be. In the words of our honoree, Dr. T. Colin Campbell:
“The ideal human diet looks like this: Consume plant-based foods in forms as close to their natural state as possible (‘whole’ foods). Eat a variety of vegetables, fruits, raw nuts and seeds, beans and legumes, and whole grains. Avoid heavily processed foods and animal products. Stay away from added salt, oil, and sugar.” (Whole: Rethinking the Science of Nutrition, p. 7)
You can get involved, too! Join PPMNY and the American College of Lifestyle Medicine with a social media campaign: Every Friday this month, prepare and share a photo of your whole food, plant-based meal on the social media platform of your choice, using the hashtag #WFPBFriday and tagging PPMNY.

Congratulations to our 90+ graduates who took on dietary change and learned how and why to fill their plates with whole plant foods during our recent 21-Day Plant Powered Jumpstart program. In just three weeks, with the support of the PPMNY community, our jumpstarters lowered their blood pressure, dropped plenty of pounds, eliminated morning stiffness, and one even reported improving her hearing!
It’s inspiring to see the simple and creative ways our participants are working more plants into their diet and how our local participants enjoyed a morning of exploring local farmers’ markets with our mentors. Thanks to Renee S., Elaine M., and Svetlana T. for sharing photos of their healthy dishes.
Ruth P. even reported success with air travel: “I bought a new pretty lunch bag, and security had fun going through my fruit, veggies, chickpea celery salad, carrot raisin salad, and aquafaba pumpkin cocoa fudge brownies.” (What a menu!!)
Finally, thank you to our incredible team of volunteers and staff who made the jumpstart possible:
