Dear Community Members:
On September 24, we had our first fundraising dinner at Copley's on Palm Canyon. We are so thankful for the owners Andrew and Julianna Manion Copley, their son Maddux and his two friends from Sacred Heart School in Palm Desert who volunteered, partner Greg Butterfield and Shannon Mesey, Restaurant Manager and all of the Copley's staff. We'd like to also thank all of the SoCal Adaptive Sports Board members who attended and donated. Tami Monica did a terrific job of organizing our silent auction which raised approximately $2,000 towards our programs. To those of you who were able to attend we very much appreciate you joining with us in creating greater societal inclusion!
At SoCal Adaptive Sports, along with our friends, we are about providing expert coaching in a variety of sports. We want all athletes to enjoy whichever sports they are participating in and play to the best of their ability. For all of us who play we understand that sports is more than physical activity and is also about emotional and social health. We observe this every time we work with athletes. We continue to level the playing field on a daily basis!
October is bringing a variety of new adaptive sports to athletes including tennis and pickleball with Special Olympics and Aceing Autism, Archery at Robin Hood in Indio, Adaptive Skating at the Berger Foundation Iceplex, hiking with Friends of the Desert Mountains, and an after-school program in collaboration with the City of Riverside. You can also register for exercise at the Hi-Desert Boys & Girls Club Monday mornings from 9:30 AM-noon. You can register for all activities below.
We will be sailing, sold out, once again with Christian and California Inclusive Sailing in Newport Beach on October 7, preceded by an adaptive workout at Cross-Fit Shorebreak in Huntington Beach. (There are still openings for the workout.) We also will be learning how to row with Community Rowing of San Diego at the end of the month. (Please note that the November 5th Fishing and Community Fair at Aziz Farms is at capacity, but you can sign up for the waiting list. We are still seeking vendors.)
On December 9, we are hosting a lesson and an adaptive pickleball tournament at Pickled Bar, see below. On December 16 we are going to see theFirebirds, see below, for the second time. If we sell 100 tickets we get to take a post-game photo on the ice! Tickets are $24 each.
We are also offering 1:1 and small group coaching and workouts. If you'd like to do this please have SoCal Adaptive Sports assigned by your Inland Regional Center Community Services Coordinator.
This past week was another fun-filled one starting with our partnership with Desert ARC and the Hi-Desert Boys and Girls Club in Yucca Valley. (Be on the lookout for more future programming with the City of Yucca Valley.)
The kind of tall man in the photo is Jakub Kusmieruk who works for the City of Yucca Valley. He wanted to see what we do. Jakub is from Poland, where my father's family is also from. Jakub is 7'4"!!!!!!!
We always look forward to ending our week with the athletes at Desert ARC-Palm Desert! They are all learning quickly how to play disc golf, pickleball, boccia, and basketball!
On Saturday, Will Rogers, Rayne and Jihu and I went to San Diego to collaborate in a wheelchair pickleball, basketball and boccia day. The organizations which coordinated the event were Mobility Community Action Partners (MCAP), Building a world where inclusion is the norm, where education leads to employment, and where quality of life is elevated. MCAP is a consistent and reliable resource and pillar of advocacy in the community, the City of San Diego Therapeutic Recreation Services and Access Trax-San Diego. SoCal Adaptive Sports is very happy to be part of MCAP, which is a great collaborative model for the US.
As the local coordinator for Special Olympics, we really want to build this program starting with tennis and pickleball, see below. (Another partner is ACEing Autism.) You can sign up now to be a Special Olympics athlete or volunteer in the Coachella Valley! Please consider joining in on the fun!
