NSEN News & Updates

Kass Harris is currently on an eight-week term as NSEN's Information & Communications manager!

Kass grew up on Cape Breton Island and is currently working on completing her Bachelor of Arts and Science in Environment at Cape Breton University. She found her passion for environmental advocacy after learning about the environmental impact of our food choices, which inspired her to pursue environmental studies in more depth. After having the opportunity to work in a variety of positions in the environmental field, she knew that her dream was to work with an environmental non-profit.

Kass is especially passionate about sustainable food choices, protecting biodiversity, outdoor education, and the psychology of environmentalism. Outside of work, she spends time with her dogs, Sam and Lincoln, who appreciate nothing more than spending their time outside enjoying all that nature has to offer.

This webinar invites attendees from the Nova Scotia Environmental Network community for an introductory presentation about the intersections between race, culture, and the environment.

Together we will be exploring some of the barriers faced by Black, Indigenous, people of colour, 2SLGBTQ+ community, Eco-Ableism and socio-economic factors within the context of the contemporary western environmental movement.

The event is intended to provide diversity training to educate and raise awareness about the need for a diverse and inclusive approach to climate action to ensure that all voices are welcomed, honoured, and involved in the call for more sustainable lifestyles.

The Canadian Environmental Network is electing Caucus Steering Committee Members for the Biodiversity Caucus and is seeking representation in all provinces and territories.

The caucus is settling in to work on the Canadian incorporation of the Post 2020 Global Biodiversity Framework (GBf)

To become the vibrant and engaged caucus to be able to meet the goal we need to recruit RCEN members in good standing to participate on the steering committee. A central effort will be to develop and steer the work of the caucus as we engage and take action with the federal government and others, to update the current Canadian Biodiversity Strategy, based on the outcomes of the GBF.

Calls to Action

A developer has applied to the federal government to fill in Dartmouth Cove. This would result in the displacement of fish, birds and other wildlife and ruin this part of the Harbour Trail for several years as trucks hauling pyritic slate and quarry rock dump their loads into the harbour.

The resulting moonscape would not be able to be developed, so it’s not for the benefit of the community, but only as a means of getting rid of fill from other construction sites.

Don’t let Dartmouth Cove become a dump site!

Sign this petition and let the federal government know it is unacceptable to treat our waterways like this.

You can also contact them directly to let them know why you think this is a terrible idea: https://nwar-rlen.tc.gc.ca/files-dossiers/2022-206446

OUR VISION

We see a Nova Scotia with clean ocean waters and a vibrant, sustainable economy, communities and industries. We envision a time when Nova Scotians no longer allow offshore exploration and development to put our ocean at risk.

OUR MISSION

To protect Nova Scotia waters, shorelines and ecosystems from risks associated with offshore exploration and development.

OUR GOALS

  1. Ensure that decisions about exploration and development in offshore Nova Scotia are made by the people most impacted.
  2. Secure a moratorium on exploration and development in Nova Scotia’s entire offshore area.
  3. Collaborate with and support other groups that have similar vision and goals.

Greetings fellow Atlantic province environmental advocates. My name is Abbie and I’m writing to you from the beautiful Annapolis Valley region of Nova Scotia. I work for a charity called Small Change Fund that focuses on environmental, Indigenous and poverty-related issues. We use crowdfunding to make big change happen by starting small.

Small Change Fund works with nonprofits, charities and grassroots groups to take a cause and elevate it to the next level. We partner on a joint project and provide a crowdfunding platform, as well as access to training, research, communications, fundraising support and more. We have partnered on everything from raising funds for a specific clean up and educational event, to supporting policy change and action through a targeted campaign. As a charity, all donations made through the Small Change Fund receive a charitable tax receipt.
