2025 saw more than 10 new or updated Shared Stewardship agreements between the USDA Forest Service and states, Tribes, and organizations. Very quickly, the Guild became interested in learning more.

D. Gordon Mott died July 9, 2026, at his home in Lakeville, ME, at the age of 94. He was born in 1932 to William and Alice (McNeil) Mott in Dalhousie, New Brunswick. He became a U.S. citizen in 1967. After ten years as a research scientist with the Canadian Forest Service, Gordon moved to the United States to take additional courses in Yale Graduate School and began a 30 year career with the U.S. Forest Service, working in Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Maine. Gordon practiced forestry with a focus on the health of the environment. He played a key role in reducing the use of chemical pesticides during spruce budworm outbreaks and encouraging the use of Bacillus-tk, an organic material, instead. In his decades of private forestry practice, he valued working with landowners who wanted a long-term, multi-purpose relationship with their land.
Fire for Water video released!The Forest Stewards Guild made this video with funding from the City of Santa Fe Water Division on behalf of the Greater Santa Fe Fireshed Coalition, a group the Guild helped start. This video provides an overview of the work of the Coalition, why it was formed, and some of the actions the Coalitions and its partners are undertaking to protect communities, forests, and watersheds and learn to live better with the fire-adapted landscapes that surround Santa Fe.

In July 2026, VCI convened leaders from diverse sectors to break barriers, understand perspectives, and drive action to harness Northeastern Forests’ ability to support long-term climate, environmental, economic, and community well-being. Markets Matter In May 2026, the Markets Matter Convening brought together more than 230 leaders representing industry, investment, Tribes, government, research institutions, and nonprofit organizations (including the Guild) to discuss opportunities and challenges facing forest product markets. Participants explored strategies for strengthening markets, increasing utilization of wood fiber, and creating new opportunities for underutilized forest resources. Read the new Action Plan here.
What might the 'super' El Niño-Southern Oscillation mean for wildfire?New research is very relevant to the strong El Nino: "El Niño increases the likelihood of extensive area burned in the Eastern and Northern Rockies GACCs during the following spring.. El Niño decreases the chances of extensive area burned in the Great Basin, Rocky Mountain, and Southern GACCs during the following spring and summer." Learn more here.
