A Pencil in His Pocket: Book Two

Anne Weber

Independently Published

Weber's second historical novel uses the very few facts available about artist John Mulvany, painter of Custer' Last Rally, to build a feasible and entertaining story. It sets the stage for Mulvany's growing interaction with the violence and intrigues of clandestine, pre-Civil War nationalism, the professional and cultural life of an artist in New York City in the 1850's, and Mulvany's commitment to attending the famous National Academy of Design.

Mainely Mayhem

Matt Cost

Encircle Publications

Things are not right in Brunswick. Chabal is wracked by the nightmare that was the Wendigo. Langdon is hired to investigate the questionable moral integrity of one of Brunswick’s favorite sons, getting thunked in the head and left to die on a boat moored in the Atlantic Ocean. And that is just the beginning. Judge Cornelius Remington is being fast-tracked to be a Supreme Court Justice. Why? "Welcome to Maine: The Way Life Should Be." Or so the billboard reads upon entering the state. But that was before MAYHEM seeped in and tainted the idyllic nature of the place. A corruption that was born in Brunswick has seeped throughout the state and is threatening the entire nation. It is up to Langdon to find and stop MAYHEM before it is too late. And the clock is ticking.

Bartender Wanted

Maureen Anne Jennings

Sibylline Digital First

Life shouldn’t imitate art for a mystery writer. Gritty glamour in 1980s New York City doesn’t come cheap. To afford even her fifth-floor walkup, Rose Leary needs a gig. Bartending at a neighborhood joint subsidizes her writing, even if she does fill a dead woman’s platforms. Rose speculates about who killed her predecessor, but her looming deadline demands she dedicate all creativity to her book. When another bartender dies, Rose pictures her name scrawled at the top of the murderer’s hit list. Frightening phone calls and ominous gifts turn everyone she meets into a suspect. Dead flowers dirty her hallway, and her phone shrills menace. As terror invades her life and paralyzes her writing, Rose struggles to expose the killer in a desperate race to save herself and her work. Smart and stubborn Rose brings her sharp wit to the search, defying her fear with dark humor. And cocktails.

Working the Sea: Historic Images from National Fisherman

Michael Crowley and the Penobscot Marine Museum

Islandport Press

National Fisherman, a Maine-based commercial fishing magazine billed as “the saltiest magazine on the newsstand,” has documented the lives of those working the sea for over a century along with its predecessor, Atlantic Fisherman. The entire pre-digital collection—over three thousand images—was donated to the Penobscot Marine Museum archive. Each of the more than one hundred photographs featured in Working the Sea was carefully selected to highlight the changes that took hold in America’s fisheries across the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Focusing on the boats and people which have served as the backbone of the industry, this book provides a fascinating look at a rarely seen slice of American history.

Just Like Glass

Amy Wight Chapman

Museums of the Bethel Historical Society

Just Like Glass is the story of one transformative year in the life of Amy Glass's four older siblings, and in the life of their mother, Ruth. In 1958, just as the school year is ending, Ruth’s husband, Bill, is felled by a fatal heart attack. Not knowing what else to do, she loads her grief-stricken children, ages eight to fourteen, into the station wagon with the family dog and drives north to spend the summer at their lakeside camp in western Maine. Told in the several voices of the ones who lived it, this family memoir relates how a tough-as-nails matriarch and the stillness of North Pond set a family on the path to healing, even as they struggled to redefine themselves as a family unit, with one unexpected addition.

The Adventures of Tobey as Told by Emma

Richard Spinney

Newman Springs Publishing

Excerpts from a five-star review: "The captivating story, The Adventures of Tobey as Told by Emma follows the exciting experiences of Tobey, an Alaskan malamute who had been trained by a former customs agent. This unforgettable story is suitable for dog lovers and for readers of all ages who love adventures. The story was written from Emma’s perspective and I found the relationship between the animals heart-warming. I found Emma’s experiences from her painful past to her current adventures with William and the rest of her family equally moving. Tobey's abilities are incredible and I enjoyed every case he was involved in. His appearance in court was humorous and fascinating. The photographs are vivid and help tell the story by showing Emma and the other characters featured. The Adventures of Tobey is a memorable story that readers will love for its unique, endearing characters and their enthralling adventures."
