March is Racial Capitalism Month
The Harvard Law Review aptly defined racial capitalism as “the process of deriving value from the racial identity of others, harming the individuals affected and society as a whole.” Racial capitalism is not a thing of the past, but a systemic force that continues today. The commodification of racial identity. The overvaluation of whiteness. These are but a few of the many dimensions of racial capitalism that we’ll explore in this series.
This series of workshops will unpack racial capitalism, its historical context and impact today. Our featured guests will includeDestin Jenkins,Renee Hatcher, and Kyera Singleton.

Time: Wednesday, March 16th, 6:30PM EST | Location: Zoom Only
6:30PM-7:15PM - Ujima Fund Equity Memo Q&A (Voting Members Only)
We are nearing completion of the Ujima Fund's due diligence of Jazz Urbane, and are seeking your cooperation and participation in our final phase of due diligence.
During this session Voting Members will:
→ Learn about the Jazz Urbane Cafe, which is seeking investment from the Ujima Fund. → Review Jazz Urbane's information to see if you have questions or need clarification. → Share your insights to help Ujima decide if Jazz Urbane could be a good investment.
7:15-8:30PM - Equity 101 Primer (Open to General Public)
Following the Jazz Urbane session there will be an Equity 101 Primer, where members will learn more about equity investment deals, the difference between debt and equity, and more!
This session is led by Jock Payten, Interim Managing Director, Ujima Fund, and founder of the Finance100 Series.
Last week we held our second #IYKYK workshop. Note that these workshops are not recorded and, in lieu of notes and video, we'll share reflections from session participants.
From Mabel Gonzalez Nunez:
Overall, I thought the session was informative and had a lot of thought provoking information. Renee did a great job simplifying complex information and providing high level examples to provide the audience with more context. I left the session feeling more informed about current capitalist structures and also learned about a new co-op in Chicago which was nice.
