Riding and Celebrating Ke Ala Hele Makālae
HBL’s Community Engagement Coordinator Vincent Levy recently attended Ke Ala Hele Makālae’s induction to the Rails to Trails Conservancy’s Hall of Fame on Kauaʻi. During his visit, Vincent rode Ke Ala Hele Makālae with Tommy Noyes of Kauai Path and Suzanne Matyas of Rails to Trails Conservancy and learned about the history (and future) of this remarkable shared-use path. See Vincent's images and observations here. (Image courtesy of County of Kauaʻi)
Electric Education!
HBL is debuting a multi-part video series all about e-biking in Hawai‘i, made possible with funding from the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation. Did you or a loved one get a new e-bike under the Christmas tree? Learn what you need to know by watching these quick videos - from what the laws are locally to where you can ride. Check out HBL's brand new e-bike videos here, or visit HBL.org/ebikes for all the e-bike education essentials.
BikeEd Is Hiring
BikeEd is hiring for part time and full time instructors. Start now, enjoy the holidays with friends and family and bring in the New Year spreading the joy (and safety) of cycling to O‘ahu’s youth. Full-time positions are Monday to Friday. Part-time positions are Thursdays and Fridays. Both approximately start 7:30am - 1:30pm.
The 2024 Bicycle Friendly State report was just published. It includes a ranking of all 50 states, plus information about how the rankings were determined.
This year, Hawai‘i ranked 25th overall in the nation and 6th out of 13 in the US West. While this is not where we want to be on the list, we are rising. In 2019, Hawai‘i was ranked 38th and in 2022, we had risen to 27th out of 50 states.
Island Voices - Perspective on Transportation Infrastructure Costs
When it comes to pedestrian and cycling infrastructure in the City and County of Honolulu, a more balanced analysis of public policy is needed. Certainly, much more than was recently outlined in Richard Borreca’s “On Politics” column, which was short on facts, policy, even solutions. ($80M for 2 paths for walkers, bikers? Bridge too far,” Star-Advertiser, Dec. 8).
