Meet Yara Heston....

Screenshot%202025-09-30%20204331.png

Yara was diagnosed with epilepsy at six years old after having petit mal seizures. For four years she had improvement due to medication, however the week of her tenth birthday she experienced a tonic-clonic seizure, which then continued. Yara never let epilepsy define her life, her attitude, or the way she lived. She was always optimistic, positive, and courageous. She attended National Louis University in their Professional Assistant Center for Education (PACE) program, majoring in early childhood. She loved children and working with them in day care facilities and pre-schools. Eventually, Yara was able to move into her own apartment and was surrounded with people who loved and cared for her. At times she was not able to work full-time because of her epilepsy, but fortunately most of her employers were supportive. This year marks the 20th anniversary of Yara's untimely passing on September 30, 2005 at the age of 36. As a tribute to Yara and her giving heart, her family established Yara's Fund through the Epilepsy Foundation of Delaware. The funds donated over the years have been used to assist those in the community with medication expenses. Yara was generous and giving, and this is her family's way of helping others in her honor. EFDE is grateful to Yara's family and to those who have donated to Yara's Fund over the past twenty years, raising over $30,700 to assist our community. As Yara's Fund continues to flourish in the years to come, we remember and honor Yara's compassionate spirit.
