Dear beloveds,

The UUMFE eNews will be delayed a week (sent on 6/15 instead of 6/8) because many of our staff will be attending the Treaty People Gathering in northern Minnesota, June 5-8. UUs will be among the more than 1,000 water protectors and allies showing up as part of a Multifaith Delegation

This is an important moment for UUs to mobilize in solidarity with Indigenous Frontline Communities (one of the priorities of our denomination’s Create Climate Justice campaign). Please read on for ways to support this mobilization virtually or in person!

IF YOU CAN SUPPORT FROM AFAR:

1. Pressure President Joe Biden to cancel this project!

  • Send an email
  • Call 888-724-8946 and use this script:
  • “My name is __, I live in ___. As a person of faith, I’m calling to urge President Biden to revoke permits for oil and gas pipelines like Dakota Access and Line 3, and stop approving all new fossil fuel projects. If the President is serious about his commitment to frontline and faith communities and addressing the climate crisis, he must keep fossil fuels in the ground and invest in the communities that have borne the brunt of pollution and climate disaster.”
  • Organize an Action Hour to mobilize a group from your congregation and community to make calls! Use this toolkit from GreenFaith to make things easy for you - it includes a sample meeting agenda, outreach materials, and more.

2. Pressure banks to Defund Line 3

3. Join the Virtual Rally for the Treaty People Gathering, Sunday, June 6 at 4pm PT / 5 MT / 6 CT / 7 ET, organized by Minnesota Interfaith Power & Light and partners!  - REGISTER

4. Donate to support the on-the-ground mobilization

  • Legal Defense Fund - mass arrests are expected at this gathering. Please support bailing people out of jail and other legal fees!
  • Multifaith Delegation Fund - help cover costs related to lodging and food for the Interfaith delegation as well as travel scholarships for impacted and frontline community members.
  • Donate to the frontlines - this page lists many frontline fundraisers and ways to plug into the movement more longterm.

5. Amplify the movement on social media

IF YOU ARE COMING IN PERSON

Please read this information from Minnesota UU Social Justice Alliance (MUUSJA):

How to Prepare, Before You Go

FAQ for more info:  please see our FAQ sheet which includes a map, links to tentative schedule, and a lot of details you might want to know.

Step One: Sign up to come: Join the main Treaty People Gathering orientation and training session TODAY on Tuesday, June 1st at 7pm CT -- this should be your first priority if you have not already tuned in to previous trainings. And, be sure to sign up with the main TPG site so you are registered for the main events and will get updates if anything changes, at www.treatypeoplegathering.com.

Step Two: Sign up to be with the multifaith delegation including UU's, if you wish: To connect with UU's coming from all over the country, and get updates from the multifaith delegation camp, you should ADDITIONALLY sign up ALSO with the multifaith delegation form. Even if you're camping elsewhere, you're welcome to come visit Saturday & Monday evening at the multifaith basecamp.

Step Three: Meet UU's who are coming from across the country: If you have already attended one of the main Treaty People training/orientation sessions, join MNIPL, MUUSJA and others for an online intro to the multi-faith delegation camp, orientation and weekend logistics TODAY on Tuesday, June 1st, at 7pm CT. There will be UU-specific break-outs at the end. If you miss this, you are welcome to gather with us late Saturday afternoon and Monday evening, at the multifaith delegation camp (at Northern Pines, see the FAQ for details), for grounding and orientation before the main events, and for debriefing after the actions on Monday, and planning ahead to next steps.

For background: Check out "Prepare to Care" and virtual tours of the Water Protector camps in MUUSJA's video archive.

Thank you!

Onward in faith and solidarity,
