News from the Forest
Words from the Guild & NPS RFI Interns
Written by Nick Alpeza and Holden Moore
This month we're hearing from Resilient Forestry Initiative interns Nick Alpeza and Holden Moore. Nick writes about deer management, tree planting, and invasive plant removal in Valley Forge National Historical Park, while Holden recaps his work building Forest Resilience at Minute Man National Historical Park.
As my crewmate and I approach one of the long-term monitoring plots we have been tasked with establishing for a study on forest response to disturbances, I take in my surroundings. The ground is softened by a blanket of sphagnum moss, woodsorrel, and goldthread. Above us red spruce and balsam fir trees tower, some with dead branches adorned with old man’s beard lichen.
Questions, the Invisible That Shapes Them, and a New Tool
Written by Dave Wager, forest ecologist
Leopold names the problem before we do. The defining fact of our discipline is not any single technique but the sheer complexity of the thing being managed—a complexity so deep that expertise mostly teaches you the size of your own ignorance.

Order Ethan Tapper's new book! After years of saying that The Forest Year is “coming,” I can finally say that it is “here” and I hope you’ll consider ordering a copy and join me in celebrating its arrival.
The Guild was chosen to participate in a special charitable giving campaign called Target Circle, which is sponsored and funded by Target. If you are a Target customer, now through December 31, 2026, you can vote for usthrough the Target Circle program to help direct some of Target’s funds to us! Find out more about Target Circle here: www.target.com/circle
If you shop at Target, will you help us make the most of this incredible opportunity? Every vote counts to help us receive as large a portion of the available Target funds as possible, as we continue our mission to forge and healthy future for people and forests. Only active Target customers will have points to use for voting, so if you don’t have a Target Circle account, you can set one up hereand you’ll get points after purchases are made. If you have trouble finding the Guild at the Target Circle link, change your store location using the zip code 87502, refresh the page, and we should pop up.
Ami recorded a video of herself casting some votes to help guide you. Remember, as you shop, you earn more votes and you can keep voting multiple times during the campaign! Many Target shoppers aren’t even aware of this program, so you can even ask friends and family to cast their votes for us, as well.
