Many Californians are all too familiar with the devastating impact of wildfires. As fires continue to burn in the Los Angeles region, the Coalition for Clean Air is deeply concerned about the safety of those directly affected and the hazardous air quality impacting the broader community. Wildfire smoke contains harmful pollutants, including fine particulate matter (PM2.5), which pose serious risks to respiratory and cardiovascular health. To help you stay informed and protected, we have compiled resources to track current wildfires along with practical steps to safeguard yourself and your loved ones from the effects of wildfire smoke.
Track active wildfires and their impact on air quality using the live map on AirNow.gov. This tool provides real-time updates on fire locations and the air quality in surrounding areas. We recommend focusing on the color-coded markers rather than the specific numerical values, as the colors offer a clearer and more intuitive understanding of air quality conditions.
Stay Indoors if you are not under evacuation orders. Keep your windows and doors closed to limit your exposure to smoke, soot and ash.
Use air purifiers to improve indoor air quality. If your home has central air conditioning, ensure the system is equipped with a high-efficiency filter to help reduce indoor pollutants.
Wear a mask to protect yourself from wildfire smoke. N95 masks, including any you may still have from the COVID-19 pandemic, are highly effective at reducing your exposure to fine particles in the air.
