Celebrating Women’s History Month:

Recognizing WGEP’s Change Makers of Tomorrow

This Women’s History Month, we celebrate the inspiring young women leaders and male champions in WGEP’s Our Sisters Lead program. These changemakers are advocating for gender equality and transforming their communities by hosting local meetings, leading radio programs, and running awareness campaigns to champion gender equity.

This year, Our Sisters Lead is equipping 333 girls and 61 male champions in two rural high schools in Senegal with the leadership skills they need to drive change. Students are leading initiatives on conflict resolution, early marriage prevention, the importance of education, and ending gender-based violence.

At Women’s Global Education Project, we believe education is the key to breaking barriers and creating lasting change. Join us in supporting these young leaders as they build a more equitable future.

We are thrilled to share that WGEP’s Casimir Coly will join an insightful panel discussion this Thursday, March 13 at 9:30 CST/10:30 ET hosted by the Batonga Foundation on the power of male engagement in female-focused programs. Casimir will share insights from his work leading the Our Sisters Lead programs Male Champions—a WGEP initiative that equips men and boys to advocate for gender equality and challenge harmful norms in their communities.

This session is a side event of the UN’s Commission on the Status of Women, and will explore how integrating men and boys into women’s empowerment initiatives can enhance economic independence for women and drive transformative change in households and communities.

WGEP Spotlighted in Wednesday Journal for

USAID Grant Freeze Impact

Oak Park’s Wednesday Journal recently featured a story on Women’s Global, highlighting our organization’s ongoing efforts to support literacy and education in Kenya despite a sudden USAID grant freezeโ€‹.

In 2023, WGEP proudly secured a $2 million USAID grant to establish and sustain the Our Sisters Read library in Tharaka-Nithi County, Kenya—a groundbreaking resource for literacy and education in the region. However, an unexpected executive order abruptly froze federal funding, leaving us with unreimbursed expenses and putting the future of the library at risk. Now, more than ever, we are calling on our community and philanthropic partners to help us keep this vital center open and ensure that girls and their communities continue to access the education they deserve.

In celebration of International Women's Day, the Chicago Council on Global Affairs featured an inspiring interview with our founder, Amy Maglio, highlighting her dedication to empowering communities through girls' education.

Reflecting on her journey from Peace Corps volunteer in Senegal to establishing the Women's Global Education Project 21 years ago, Amy shared insights into how our grassroots approach has enabled over 50,000 children in rural Africa to access education and training. She emphasized the importance of collaborating with local communities and adopting a holistic strategy to address challenges like early marriage and pregnancy. Amy's unwavering commitment continues to drive our mission to transform lives through education!
