All silent auction contributions and donations help fund bike safety education, advocacy, and infrastructure improvements across Hawai‘i. First decking is coming up on March 6th when bills need to emerge from all their committees and be submitted to the clerk of the originating chamber for third reading. This is a requirement for any bill to make it to the Governor’s desk for enactment.
HTA Publishes Draft DMAPs For All Islands Public Invited to Make Comments
The Hawai‘i Tourism Authority has just published draft Destination Management Action Plans for each Island. These plans will guide tourism policy for the next few years and the public is invited to provide comments by Monday, March 2, 2026 at 11:59pm.
HBL’s comments will seek to elevate the role of bicycling, bike networks, and bike infrastructure as cornerstone solutions for responsible tourism management. We encourage you to submit your comments, by visiting the website, selecting an island(s) plan(s), and clicking inside the document to make a comment - a popup window will appear to make your comment(s).
HDOT Invites Public to Comment on the Statewide Long-Range Land Transportation Plan Update
The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation invites everyone to share their thoughts on future land transportation needs for freight, motorists, transit, bicyclists and pedestrians as part of the Statewide Long-Range Transportation Plan update.
The plan is HDOT’s roadmap for how to improve the transportation systems people rely on to get around through 2045.
A series of virtual public meetings is planned in March to learn more about the statewide plan, as well as specific meetings to discuss Kaua‘i and Hawai‘i plans. Click here to read more and RSVP for meetings.
Zach's Ride for Safe Streets
On Saturday, April 4th, join our community at the Hawaiʻi State Capitol for the 2026 Zach's Ride. This year's event will feature two ride options: a shorter, family-friendly route and a longer, impactful ride. The 2026 Zach's Ride begins and ends at the Hawai‘i State Capitol, bringing us together at the heart of where change happens. Ride in honor, in community, and in support of safer streets for all.
The Hawai‘i Bicycling League’s Hale‘iwa Metric Century returns on Sunday, April 26th with a fully-supported ride along O‘ahu’s North Shore. From seasoned riders to first-time participants, this scenic event offers a memorable day on the bike. Every registration directly supports HBL’s advocacy and education programs working toward safer streets statewide. Sign up early, ride with purpose, and help move Hawai‘i forward one mile at a time.
Haleʻiwa Metric Century Volunteer Signup Is Now Live!
The 2026 Haleʻiwa Metric Century is coming up in April! From Thursday, April 23rd to Sunday, April 26th, the HMC has four days of volunteer opportunities. This includes Packet Pickup shifts in Honolulu Thursday – Saturday and Sunday event shifts in both Haleʻiwa and Honolulu.
March into better bicycling this March! HBL has multiple learning opportunities this month to beef up your bike handling skills, increase your comfort on your bike navigating urban streets, and improve your group riding & hill climbing technique!
Seen these markings on the pavement? They’re called Sharrows (short for Shared-Lane Arrows)and are meant to offer positioning guidance to bicyclists riding on the road, keeping them away from the “Door Zone” & out of the gutter. They also tell motorists to look for bicyclists & help foster the idea of a shared space on streets that don’t have bike lanes.
HBL Members can ride across Japan’s inland sea on car-free expressways at the Cycling Shimanamievent in October 2026! Registration opens later this spring, and HBL can help secure your spot. Learn more about this ride and an optional bike tour.
