To our Guild community,
The Forest Stewards Guild is organizing peer-learning field trips to learn about and support the US Forest Service’s (USFS) Shared Stewardship strategy. We are working with USFS, state forestry agencies, and partners on day-long field trips for the people making Shared Stewardship work in the woods. By connecting foresters and planners from different states, these peer-learning events will help spread successful approaches and avoid pitfalls. If you’d like to join us, we have three opportunities this summer. If you have ideas for similar field trips in your state, please let us know!
Shared Stewardship is a cooperative approach to managing national forests – learn more in this recent Guild article. Each field trip will visit existing or planned projects where USFS or state forestry agency staff will explain the project goals, the agreement mechanisms, contracting complexities, and outcomes. Then the wider group will ask questions, offer suggestions from their experience, and discuss challenges. So far we have three events planned:
- North Carolina, July 21 – We will be looking at cooperative efforts assist forest recovery from Hurricane Helene probably on the Pisgah National Forest. Let us know if you want to join us!
- Wyoming, September 9&10 – This two-day event will focus on the Kemmerer Range District of the Bridger Teton National Forest and include visit to local wood products facilities. Let us know if you want to join us!
If you have ideas for future Shared Stewardship peer-learning opportunities please email Eytan Krasilovsky (eytan@forestguild.org).
