Welcome back to our exciting annual newsletter series, "Celebrating Changemakers: Honoree Spotlight." In this series, we embark on a journey through the lives and accomplishments of extraordinary individuals who have made a lasting impact on our community and beyond. Each week, we will shine a well-deserved spotlight on one honoree, revealing their inspiring journey, their contributions, and the indelible mark they've left on the world. This week, we are thrilled to honor Kenneth Li, a visionary leader who transformed Houston’s Chinatown into a thriving cultural and economic hub, and whose lifelong dedication to civic engagement continues to empower and uplift communities across Houston. |
CHAMPIONING DEVELOPMENT, INSPIRING CHANGE:
KENNETH LI, Board Chair of SWMD |
A VISIONARY WHO BUILT MORE THAN A CHINATOWN |
Kenneth Li’s journey from a young immigrant to one of Houston’s most influential civic leaders is a story of vision, resilience, and unwavering dedication to community. Born in Taiwan and raised in Hong Kong, Kenneth moved to Houston in the 1980s to attend Houston Baptist University (now Houston Christian University). While studying, he worked at his uncle’s Diho Supermarket, the first Asian grocery store on Bellaire Boulevard. That experience opened his eyes to the needs of Houston’s growing Asian population and planted the seeds for a lifelong mission to build a place where immigrants could thrive. |
TURNING CRISIS INTO OPPORTUNITY |
In the late 1980s, as Houston faced economic decline, Kenneth made a bold decision to stay and invest. He began acquiring foreclosed properties and inviting investors from across the U.S. and Asia to help revitalize the area. His efforts transformed Bellaire Boulevard into the vibrant corridor now known as Houston’s Chinatown, one of the largest and most diverse Chinatowns in the country. Today, as Chairman of the Southwest Management District, Kenneth oversees a region that among the most multicultural in all of Houston. |
A TIRELESS ADVOCATE FOR ASIAN AMERICAN RIGHTS |
Kenneth’s impact goes far beyond real estate. He has spent decades fighting for the rights and visibility of Asian Americans, advocating for fair representation in civic life. He was the first Asian American appointed to Houston’s City Planning Commission and has served on numerous boards, including the Houston Housing Authority, Texas Safety and Business Alliance, Asian Real Estate Association of America (as National Chair), Asian Chamber of Commerce, Houston Taiwanese Chamber, and Chinese Community Center (CCC). His leadership has helped shape policies, promote safety, and foster economic development for underserved communities across Houston. His sons also attended CCC’s Chinese School, continuing the legacy of cultural heritage and connection that Kenneth has helped nurture. |
A LIFE OF SERVICE AND SACRIFICE |
Kenneth’s philosophy is simple yet profound: The more you give, the more you get. His family once joked that they had “donated him to the community,” a reflection of his tireless devotion. He believes that resilience is key—not just in business, but in community building. “It’s easy to build something,” he says, “but not easy to keep developing it.” That belief has guided his decades of service, including his roles as CCC’s Board Chair from 2016 to 2017 and co-Chair of the Steering Committee for the New Horizons Expansion Project from 2015 to 2019, during which he successfully led a $7 million capital campaign and the most significant expansion of CCC’s facilities to date. |
As we prepare to celebrate our 2025 A United Vision: Shaping Tomorrow Together Luncheon on Thursday, November 13, 2025, at the River Oaks Country Club, we proudly honor Kenneth Li for his unwavering leadership and lifelong dedication to strengthening the community and empowering Houstonians. His story reminds us that shaping tomorrow begins with courage, compassion, and a commitment to helping people. Join us in celebrating a man whose legacy continues to inspire and uplift generations. |
