The Charlottesville Women in Tech organization will be holding a Tech company meet and greet event on October 28th.  The session, which will run from 12-2pm, is meant to introduce our local Women in Tech members to the full set of Technology firms in Charlottesville.  We want to provide members with a broader understanding of the depth of employment options in our community.

The event will consist of local firms providing a 2-3 minute introduction of their firm to the community (presentation style) while members have lunch.  After the formal presentations, members will be allowed to mingle in an open area in which they can meet representatives from these Tech companies.

We would love to invite you to participate in our meet and greet day.  There is no cost to you.  CWIT will be supporting the lunch and event.  This is entirely about connecting both the tech women in our community and the local tech organizations.

SEPTEMBER EVENT UPDATE:
LOCAL VS. REMOTE WORK PANEL DISCUSSION

About 20 people joined together for the September CWIT event: a panel of experts talking about Local vs. Remote Work. After some networking around food and beverages supplied by our CWIT Champion Sponsor, WillowTree,  we gathered as host Stephanie Lewandowski spoke with panelists Elaine Cheng, Sara Piedmonte, and Molly Pickral. Here are a few things that stood out:

  • Tech is a competitive space right now. The talent pool is now the entire country, with remote work becoming the norm.

  • Being able to successfully work from home is a privilege. Not everyone has the opportunity for quiet time and a desirable desk set-up in their house. Some may need dedicated space in a shared office. For others, the opportunity to work from home may provide a perfect balance of how they spend their time.

  • One employer represented has a Slack channel dedicated to praise —so coworkers can call each other out for good reasons! Creating opportunities to connect informally like this can facilitate a sense of belonging and togetherness, even when working remotely.

TECH-GIRLS NEWSLETTER:

International Day of the Girl

Ten years ago the United Nations declared October 11 International Day of the Girl, to recognize girls' rights, focus attention on the need to address the challenges girls face, promote gender equality and empower all girls. Today, we are also celebrating 10 years of Tech-Girls!

Why Tech-Girls?
The idea for Tech-Girls came from Kim Wilkens, after she learned that the number of women studying computer science (CS) had fallen from 37% in the 1980s to 18% in 2010. The guiding principles for Tech-Girls - spark interest, build confidence, nurture inclusive community, and help girls develop a tech identity - were inspired by Dr. Joanne Cohoon, who dedicated her career to removing barriers and encouraging women and girls in tech.
