Students for LEAF Starts on June 22 - Still Time to Sign Up!
Students for LEAF, our flagship 7-week summer program for middle and high school students, starts on June 22nd, and we only have one space left!
The program nurtures young people's passion for environmental conservation, sustainable living, science, technology, art and math. We are cultivating the next generation of leaders to tackle global challenges such as food insecurity, water conservation and climate change.
Arushi, one of our former students, said, “Students for LEAF was a truly unique experience for my peers and myself to learn all about sustainable agriculture and more from dedicated master gardeners. I have never taken a program that is as immersive and welcoming, filled with interesting people I never would have met otherwise. For me, it was more a valuable, special experience than any of the summer classes held at big-name universities. One word that captures the program is positivity.”
Program Location: LEAF Urban Farm, 38339 Mission Blvd, Fremont
Program Dates: June 22 to August 6 | Mondays & Thursdays, 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Over the years, LEAF has grown into much more than a community garden. Our Urban Gardens have become living classrooms, soil science labs, and community spaces that empower people to learn, connect, and grow together.
As our work expanded beyond growing food to include education, soil science research, and community building, we realized our brand and website no longer reflected the full breadth of LEAF. Over the past year, we've taken time to listen, reflect, and clarify who we are and how to get involved.
Our refreshed brand and website are designed to better tell LEAF's story. We invite you to explore the new site and let us know what you think!
LEAF Inspires Stanford Students
Earlier this year, we collaborated with Stanford’s Earth Systems Program’s Environmental Storytelling Class. During a 10-week hands-on writing course, students visited the LEAF Urban Farm, conducted interviews with our volunteers and staff, and engaged with our community.
Now, you canread their stories online. They explore themes from healing the soil and reconnecting with nature to deeply personal reflections on community, belonging, food, and the people working to create a more hopeful and sustainable future.
The course was led by documentary filmmaker and Stanford Lecturer E’Jaaz A. Mason. “I love [teaching students] to be able to translate complex ideas around the environment into stories that the general public will not only enjoy reading, but will be educated or inspired by,” said E’Jaaz.
The project has also been featured in the Stanford Report, the university’s official communications channel. Congrats to all the participants, and thank you to Stanford for choosing LEAF as your community partner for this class!
Tri-City Interfaith Council Convenes at LEAF Urban Farm
The Tri-City Interfaith Council, a grassroots organization that brings together people of diverse religious beliefs from Fremont, Newark, and Union City, held its monthly general meeting at the LEAF Urban Farm in May. Led by Rev. Charlene Hinckley, a United Church of Christ Pastor, the group first convened for a prayer, then toured the farm and later continued discussing their business.
Inviting groups like the Tri-City Interfaith Council to LEAF is part of our focus on building community. Are you involved with a local community group? We’d love to collaborate with you. Please get in touch!
