Welcome to the first installment of Black Mothers In Power's Social Justice Bulletin. As part of our commitment to eradicate racial health disparities for Black birthing people and Black babies throughout Delaware, comes the subsequent push to create a more equitable and just society. This commitment extends to the many social determinants of health including housing, education, criminal justice, and more. In the monthly bulletin, you can learn more about areas for you to get involved, updates to the organization, events, and stories throughout our communities.

My name is Mia Wilson, I am a rising senior undergraduate student attending Elon University majoring in Public Health and minoring in Psychology. My interests include Women's, Maternal, and Neonatal Health as well as the intersection of race and ethnicity in healthcare.

This past semester I took part in undergraduate research called Unmasking The Origins of Maternal Morbidity Inequities (UMOMMI). This project focused on understanding how maternal health care differs in terms of severe maternal morbidity and mortality in hospitals, with an emphasis on outcomes and inequities by race/ethnicity. I am also a founding member of the Health Equity and Racism Lab (H.E.R Lab) established on Elon's campus in 2021.

I look forward to gaining knowledge and an understanding of how Black Mothers in Power contributes to the community and furthers the education of maternal health and morbidity to close the racial gap and improve maternal health overall.
