A Look Back at 20 Years of WGEP

As Women's Global celebrates our 20th Anniversary, we're taking a moment to reflect on our journey and the incredible milestones achieved over the past two decades. From our humble beginnings gathered around Amy's dining room table, WGEP has blossomed into a 27-person team, predominantly composed of local activists and leaders in our program regions. It's been an extraordinary ride, witnessing significant moments both within our organization and in the lives of the girls we serve.

Let's take a moment to revisit some of the highlights of the past 20 years:

These accomplishments stand as a testament to the unwavering commitment of every member of the WGEP community and the incredible longevity of grassroots initiatives. As we reflect, we celebrate the strides made in girls' education and the inspiring dedication of the girls in our programs as we continue our journey toward a world where every girl has access to the tools she needs to thrive.

Scholar Success Stories

Khadidiatou

Khadidiatou came to Women’s Global as a scholar when she was 12 years old, and remained a part of Sisters to School through high school. Today, she works on staff at Women’s Global in Senegal! Here she explains what WGEP has meant to her:

“I have been working for Women’s Global for two years now. When I started working with Women’s Global, I could see the affection that people have for this program in the communities that we visit and how supportive they are of this program. I see their engagement when they participate in our community meetings. Each time we hold a community meeting, I see parents stand up to speak and thank Women’s Global.

Today when I see my friends (who are former scholars) who are working and helping their families, I am proud and that is what I wish for other girls and that is why I want to extend the program.”

Fana

Fana received a scholarship through Sisters to School for her last two years of high school, and went on to complete her University degree. Since then, she has become a permanent member of the WGEP team as a Monitoring and Evaluation specialist. Here she describes her experience:

“It is a dream come true for me to go study and return to work for the benefit of my community.

When I started working in the community, I noticed that with the girls’ leadership in the high schools, the girls are very engaged, their attitude has changed and they are focused on succeeding. For the women’s income generation activities, I see that the women have become empowered to obtain profits of their own. And girls are much more committed to their studies and building their (educational) capacities.

I like this work because when I studied management at university, I always thought I wanted to come back and help my community and now I am able to do that by working with Women’s Global.”

An Update on WGEP’s Library in Kenya

In December 2023, we announced the exciting start of construction for the WGEP Library in Tharaka-Nithi, Kenya. We're delighted to update you on the progress: construction is well underway and is expected to wrap up by May 20th, 2024.

This groundbreaking library will be the first of its kind, serving as the only publicly accessible library in the entire county. Thanks to a 4-year cooperative agreement with USAID American Schools & Hospitals Abroad (ASHA), the project aims to address low literacy in the region by offering access to 10,000 books and 25 computers. Not only will the center enhance reading and digital literacy skills, but it will also serve as the headquarters for partner, TWWP’s operations in Kenya once completed.
