A CALL TO LOVE
Directly Speaking
Tom Welch, Executive Director
This is a week in which I always struggle as we get closer to Good Friday. No greater love can be than when one lays down his life for another. I can't imagine what was going through the mind of Christ that entire week, the agony of full knowledge at what was ahead, the denial of Peter three times, the kiss from Judas and that final miracle of healing the ear that had been cut off of Malchus in John 18:10. (That is the only Gospel to name him, by the way.) The twenty or so hours that followed were simply horrific. As we walk this road together to Golgotha, my prayer for us is remember His ultimate love for us. And as the criminal said from the cross, that "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom." Sinners that we are, that's my prayer for all of us.
The Episcopal Church's Presiding Bishop Sean Rowe (VTS Class of 2000) was on the campus at Virginia Theological Seminary last week. On Wednesday afternoon he offered a homily during Evensong. In his message to those gathered, we were reminded that, and I quote, "Our call is only to love and serve and please the Lord." While he was speaking directly to seminarians, faculty, guests and staff directly, he was speaking to all of us in reality.
This was Most Rev. Rowe's first personal introduction to the campus as Presiding Bishop. The entire time he was on campus he wore a black shirt, not the usual purple one for a bishop. That speaks to what I find to be a very humble nature. He was all smiles his entire time on campus. After all, this was his "happy place," this Holy Hill.
Enrolled at VTS at age 22, and in ten years Sean Rowe later became the youngest Episcopal bishop in the church. Elected on the first ballot this past summer during General Convention--just blocks away from our Service Center in Louisville--at age 50 he became the youngest Episcopal Primate ever in the USA.
Just three hours before Evensong that afternoon I was humbled to have a private meeting on behalf of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew with the Presiding Bishop while he was on campus. I opened with heart-led prayer for him. Afterwards, I asked about that mentor in his life that first set the fire of the Holy Spirit in his soul. With a big smile and twinkle in his eye he shared he was a 2nd grader when that took place and he named his Sunday school teacher that did it. We spoke of his hope for our ministry, where we wanted to be in ten years, and more. He closed our time with prayer. We shared a laugh as we closed.
We have another good leader in this Presiding Bishop. Right person. Right time, just as the church did with his predecessor. Join me in prayers for our Presiding Bishop. He covets prayer from us more than anything else. He said as much. Thanks to our founders in 1883 who, above all else, put prayer first among our tenants. 140+ years later, it still matters.

JOIN US IN PRAYER EACH WEEK
Mid-Week, Mid-Day, "12:00 Central Time"
What better way to level set during the middle of the week? We will hold a weekly Wednesday noon (CDT) prayer time over ZOOM that is open to all brothers and guests. Let's pray for the Brotherhood, for our Brothers, and even share some stories of how Prayer has impacted you or someone you know!
We can all spare 20 minutes in prayer. It's like stopping at the faith service station to fill your prayer tank!
Please join us every week when you can to recharge your prayer batteries!
The Brotherhood of St. Andrew, The Brooklyn and Queens Assemblies, and The Diocese of Chicago wish to remind you to join the weekly Bible Study on Thursdays, 8 p.m. EDT/7 p.m. CDT/6 p.m. MDT/ 5 p.m. PDT. Joining this group will allow you to continue to gain deeper knowledge, awareness, and understanding of the Bible.

New members to receive "welcome call" from
their Province President and/or Diocesan Leaders
New members are starting to receive email notification from the Service Center when their complete and funded applications are processed. Packets are also sent via USPS. Often, our Executive Director Tom Welch, makes a welcome call. Our senior leadership wants to take it a step closer to the ground. Each member of the Brotherhood has a Province President, and many have a Diocesan Coordinator contact. "What province am I in?" A map is below.
Every month province presidents receive a list of the new members in his province. You should have already received a welcome call from him by now or will in the near future. It's all about building connections so we may build community and leadership. One or more of our leaders will be calling new members by phone, so you may see an odd phone number show on your phone. Take a chance and see if it is a new Brotherhood friend on the other end. They would like to get to know you.
Likewise, every month for those new members who have indicated an interest in one or more of our seven ministries, that Ministry VP will also receive your name and plug new members into that ministry silo.
If new members aren't able to answer the call, our leaders will leave a message for a call back opportunity from our new members. What makes a new member join? What does their parish look like? What would they share to others about the Brotherhood? These are the type of questions we want to learn so we may grow in the Lord together.
A special welcome to these new members joining since April 2:
Kathy Copas, our editor, would like to include more news of chapter events and ministry meetings or events. If you have something to share, please send it to
