Message from the Executive Director
Welcome to the June newsletter! As promised, this summer will include a lot of information on IGSHPA’s new training and certification programs. Here’s a preview of what is coming in this exciting newvideo!Greg Kurtz, IGSHPA’s Technical Director, and I will be doing an overview of the new training program at the July Town Hall, followed by a comprehensive article in the JulyGeoOutlookMagazine. IGSHPA has been working with CSA Group since the Fall of 2023 on this exciting new program that will be completed by the end of the year. Stay tuned to your Inbox as the website pages and marketing materials become available, starting in July!
I mentioned in last month’s newsletter that the 2025 edition of theCSA/ANSI/IGSHPA C448 Standardwould be available at the beginning of this month. It actually published on May 30, and is the basis for all new training and certification programs mentioned above. There is a discounted rate of $175 for IGSHPA members for the licensed PDF ($250 regular price). If you don’t already have this nearly 250 page “groundbreaking” document (pun intended!), you will want to purchase it as a reference, since there have been years of work put into the document to include the latest technologies, district energy systems, energy foundations/energy piles, waste water energy transfer systems, new piping materials, new heat transfer fluids, and much more. Check out theIGSHPA Standardspage for more details.
Lastly, IGSHPA staff is working hard on putting together information on the 2026 annual conference. We will have registration, sponsorship opportunities, and exhibit space details in July. Once complete, all of the latest informationwill be available at the2026 IGSHPA Annual Conference page. Save the date on your calendar for April 14 to 16, 2026, in St. Louis, Missouri.
Have a great summer!
Sincerely,
Jeff Hammond

GeoExchange Update
Congress continues to push forward with the reconciliation process. On Monday evening, the Senate Finance Committee released its version of the package. Commercial geothermal heating and cooling systems received a lighter touch than the House version of the bill and will maintain their current trajectory with a sunset in 2035. The residential credit, however, is still under attack and is set to be repealed 180 days after enactment. This would be sometime around the end of the year.
GeoExchange is pushing hard to get this changed in the final version of the bill. The Senate currently intends to pass the bill out of the chamber by July 4th with finalization between the House and Senate by the August congressional recess.
We are targeting several key Senate offices that could decide if residential geothermal credits will get a soft landing. If you do residential work in republican states or districts, please reach out to info@geoexchange.orgfordetails on how to make your voice heard.
The 2025 edition of the C448 standard is now available! The new edition has many new updates and is the basis for all new IGSHPA training. Following are some of the updates to the nearly 250 page standard:
New section on District Energy Systems
New section on Energy Foundations / Energy Piles
New annex on Waste Water Energy Transfer Systems
New PE-RT piping material added
New glycerin-based antifreeze and detoxified ethylene glycol added as acceptable heat transfer fluids
Consolidation of clauses that appear in more than one section (moved to the General section) for ease of use and clarity
Removal of PVC as an acceptable piping material for inside piping
Validation of references used in clauses throughout the standard
Review of IGSHPA Standards Committee recommendations for changes to the standard that will allow the 2017 IGSHPA standard to be sunset when 2025 C448 is published
The new standard is available to current IGSHPA members at a discounted price of US$175 for the licensed PDF version of the standard. Non-member pricing for licensed PDF or for the paper copy (purchased through CSA or ANSI) is $250, another benefit of being an IGSHPA member!
