Let's Wish Our Scholars Luck on Their Exams!
In Senegal, WGEP scholars in middle school are preparing for their high school entrance exams! These exams are a major major milestone, and WGEP is proud to to support our scholars with extra tutoring to help them succeed. This year, WGEP is helping 410 girls prepare for exams as they transition to the next level in school.
For many girls, exams have historically been a barrier due to a lack of access to test prep resources. This stage of schooling is also a particularly vulnerable time, as girls who do not pass are at greater risk of dropping out, early marriage, and gender-based violence. By providing academic support during these critical years, WGEP ensures that our scholars are not only prepared but also empowered to advance to the next level.
Parents attend community meetings about the importance of education and the use of school resources
One of the things that makes WGEP so special is that we provide wraparound support for our scholars! This approach focuses on educational access and retention, skill-building, and community engagement, and addresses the intersecting factors that impede gender equality. We believe that when girls are empowered, entire communities thrive. That’s why we don’t just support girls—we engage their families, local leaders, and village elders in the fight for gender equity.
In Kenya, our local partner TWWP continues to bring parents into this work. In February, 179 mothers and fathers participated in sessions focused on supporting their children’s education. These gatherings emphasized how parents can strengthen school performance, monitor progress, and use school resources effectively. They also addressed broader challenges like hunger and child labor, promoting shared responsibility between families and the education system.
Parents were also encouraged to join TWWP’s Adult Information Centers to strengthen their own literacy skills, empowering them to better support their children and actively participate in school development. TWWP runs sessions for adult learners in 25 centers and reached 1,093 learners this spring. The sessions also introduced families to the new Tharaka Library & IT Centre, encouraging them to take advantage of the free resources available.
Together, we are building a holistic community of support for girls and their families as they champion gender equity!
Meet Adama Insert text here
Adama is a former Sisters to School scholar from Senegal and now serves in the Senegalese military as a midwife. Here, she shares her story and the impact Sisters to School has had on her journey:
“My name is Adama, and I’m a Senegalese military midwife currently serving at the Samba Diéry Diallo barracks. I want to express my deep gratitude to Sisters to School, which has played a decisive role in my life and career.
From elementary school through university, this organization has been like a big sister to us, present, caring, and always by our side. Thanks to their ongoing support, I was able to move confidently through my studies and achieve my goals.
Today, being a midwife in the gendarmerie is a tremendous source of pride for me. But I owe this success in large part to Sisters to School, which believed in me and supported me every step of the way.
To the entire Sisters to School team, thank you—truly. I hope my story inspires other young girls to believe in themselves and never give up on their dreams.”
