News & Events for Health Empowerment // November 23, 2021

Dear Plant Powered Community,

In this final week of Native American Heritage Month, many of us sit down to traditional Thanksgiving meals (turkey and feasting), tell a traditional Thanksgiving story (the pilgrims shared a peaceful meal with the Indigenous peoples), and then transition to the traditional American buying season.

However, November can be a time of alternative narratives and experiences, if we make mindful choices like:

🌱 Embracing meals that power our health and families with plants, rather than birds.

🌱 Recognizing that not everyone is able to feast due to hardship, and addressing the structural inequities that lead to poverty and hunger.

🌱 Telling a more nuanced story of colonialism's impact on Indigenous peoples, and our responsibility to honor their past and repair their future. Read about Native American issues and interests.

🌱 Refocusing our spending on shared experiences and giving, to reduce waste and excess.

In this spirit, I want to take the time to express my gratitude to so many:

🌱 To the Leni Lenape people whose land many of us now inhabit, who cultivated the "Three Sisters" -- maize, beans, and squash -- and had great wisdom of plants' role in healing.

🌱 To our tremendous PPMNY team of volunteers and staff who have made so much happen with great passion, a collaborative spirit, and ambition.

🌱 To the people in our community who believe in our mission, and who show appreciation in diverse ways.

Humbly and gratefully,

Lianna Levine Reisner, Network Director
