Sketching with Renoir
Nicole d'Entremont
Maine Authors Publishing
Sketching with Renoir assumes a micro view on American life, post WWII and the Great depression, following a family through an entire year in this period of recovery, from 1947 to 1948. Ev is an artist. Her husband, Theo, a newly-minted architect, has just completed his first solo job for a wealthy gentleman named Gerald Keenan. With their five-year-old daughter, Cleo, and her dog, Kip, we have a complete view of the Boudreau family, all residing within a small home in the rural town of Loganville, Pennsylvania. Over the course of a year, Ev struggles to paint and feels the closing-in of her life while her husband’s world expands, Gerald Keenan wrestles with a secret even deeper than being a closeted gay man in the 1940's, and Cleo hones her observational skills. Through it all, the townspeople of Loganville make various oracular appearances. In other words, this narrative introduces us to life both "then" and now.
Shay appears to have the perfect marriage to Gideon Wells, Boston’s most popular news anchor. But their lives are ripped apart when she is attacked outside the soup kitchen where she volunteers. Depressed and struggling to remember who assaulted her, Shay hires a new maid to help her around the house while she recovers from her injuries. But this new maid is not what she seems, and things go from bad to worse, causing Shay to revisit a painful childhood past that she’s been desperately trying to forget.

As women, we often have a hard time accepting compliments. Even when we do, it is usually countered with a self-deprecating comment. Why? Perhaps, in part, because we put too much pressure on ourselves—especially when it comes to how our bodies change with age. This book explores the ways in which the years change our bodies, and it is a reminder that no woman is alone on this journey. Far from it! Hopefully this book will shift your perspective on midlife transformation from, 'Ugh!' to, 'Ha'!
