Governor and IDOT: Prioritize Sustainable Transportation
IMG_2855-scaled.jpg

Ride Illinois was among dozens of other sustainable transportation, environmental, and social justice advocacy organizations to sign a letter to Governor JB Pritzker and Illinois Department of Transportation calling on state officials to move away from the car-centric status quo and allocate more resources to creating a safer, more efficient, more equitable, and more environmentally-friendly transportation system.

Ride Illinois implores Governor Pritzker and IDOT to follow the USDOT’s guidance and direct substantial IIJA funding to non-motorized modes and increased safety for vulnerable road users. Click here to read more.

Preparing for the National Bike Summit
summit22header.png

Ride Illinois staff and about 20 advocates from around Illinois are attending the National Bike Summit, in-person in D.C. or virtually, from March 27-30. To date, we’ve scheduled meetings with Senator Durbin and eight Illinois representatives to voice our support for the Active Transportation Infrastructure Investment Program (ATIIP) and the Healthy Streets Program.

If funded, the ATIIP will create active transportation systems that ensure people can safely bike, walk or roll, while reducing carbon emissions and creating new jobs. To begin to build out active transportation networks, the ATIIP will need to be funded in the appropriations process.

The Healthy Streets program, works to reduce flooding, improve air quality, and mitigate the urban heat island effect within communities of color and low income communities by providing grants to state and local governments, as well as nonprofits, to both plant trees and deploy Smart Surfaces, such as reflective pavement in urban heat islands and porous pavement in flood prone areas. The program requires engagement with and support by community leaders.

There is still time to register for the National Bike Summit! Visit bikeleague.org/summit to join the Illinois delegation. And we’ll be sure to share an update (and some photos) after the Summit!

Great American Rail Trail in Illinois

Ride Illinois, advocates, and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources recently met with Rails to Trails Conservancy to discuss the vision, challenges, and opportunities for the Great American Rail-Trail in western Illinois. Our discussion focused on the economic impact of trails and bicycle tourism, the deteriorating conditions of the I&M Canal and Hennepin Canal Trails, and the need to identify legislative champions in the Illinois House and Senate in order to secure funding. The conversation will continue in April and we’ll share updates in future e-newsletters.
