Dear neighbors,

If you were one of the many people who made a last-minute rain barrel purchase, I’m sure your barrels filled during the recent storms! 🌧

Store NotesSolana Center's store will be closed tomorrow, September 2nd for the Labor Day weekend. Our batteries and lightbulb recycling program is closed until further notice due to difficulty with the City of Encinitas’ hauler agreement. Our electronic-waste recycling program is still open after September 2nd.

Community Giving: San Diego Gives, a county-wide campaign to catalyze San Diegans to learn about and support local nonprofits, kicked off last month and will culminate in a coordinated giving day on September 7th. Please visit our SD Gives page to learn about our new, impactful programs, including the region’s only Climate Solutions Resource Center.

Yours in regeneration,

Jessica Toth
Executive Director

Seasonal Happenings

This fall, migratory birds will begin to arrive in San Diego, including the white-crowned sparrow, cedar waxwing, and surf scoter. Orb weaver spiders grow their largest in the fall, spinning feet-long webs that can reach across an entire driveway! 🕷🕸 Bats will also arrive in coastal San Diego County, spending their time in rocky areas such as Mission Trails and Los Peñasquitos Canyon Reserve. Learn more about San Diego's autumnal occurrences here or watch a video with more details here.

San Diego Residents: Positive Impacts of Organic Waste Recycling are Immediate

Attention San Diego residents! Did you know that organic waste – food scraps, food-soiled paper products, wood, and yard trimmings – accounts for about 40% of the waste in our landfills? Once left to decompose in a landfill, organic waste produces methane, a pollutant that traps the sun’s heat, warms the atmosphere, and accelerates climate change.

While recycling organic waste is new for many of us, it is an important and immediate solution to reduce the impacts of climate change and ensure a more sustainable future that benefits all of us. By simply putting the right materials in the correct containers, we can all have a direct impact on the outcome of what that waste produces, reducing damage to our environment.

Adding compost to soil helps increase our resilience against the effects of climate change and drought by increasing the soil's ability to retain moisture and helping us conserve water. One of the other processes used to recycle organic waste can create natural gas, which is trapped and cleaned to power vehicle fleets and generate energy.
