In February, the Healthy Coasts project began on the eastern shore of Nova Scotia. Led and financed by the Anglican Church, with support from the University of Dalhousie and the Rural Communities Foundation of Nova Scotia, this citizen science initiative aims to connect communities with coastal ecosystem conservation and climate change preparedness.
The project has identified four coastal sites for citizen scientists to monitor, each of them led by a parishioner, but not exclusive to members of the church. They will track beach profiles, climate, wave and current patterns, and coastal biota. The goal is to enhance coastal residents' sense of belonging, knowledge about coastal ecosystems, and preparedness for climate change effects.
Citizen science is an effective tool for this purpose. By collecting and analyzing data, residents learn about coastal phenomena and can make informed decisions about living healthily on the coast. The project emphasizes that nature is God's creation, and good Christians should care for it.

We call these Stantec studies "pre-development studies" because that is their focus – what areas can be developed and how. We are assured that the outcome ‘could’ be that no areas can be developed, but we will see from the final study. This study was paid for by, and is being overseen by, the Province’s Housing Task Force, which has a stated goal of having ‘shovels in the ground’ at Sandy Lake Special Planning Area in 2024. The final report is expected to have more about water quality. We have multiple concerns and are submitting a response. For example, why is there no mention of Salmon having returned to Sandy Lake in recent years? There must be a thorough study done of potential impacts of development on the Sackville River floodplain.
Busy 2024 hurricane season expected in Atlantic Ocean
All signs are pointing to a very busy hurricane season in the Atlantic Ocean.
The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has just released its annual hurricane season forecast and is projecting 17 to 25 storms, the most it has ever forecast.
Of those storms, eight to 13 are expected to become hurricanes, but it's still too early to tell if they will hit Atlantic Canada.

Northern Pulp critics urge N.S. government to be wary of Paper Excellence
The mayor of Pictou, and environmentalists, have urged the provincial government and municipal leaders on the South Shore to be wary in their dealings with Northern Pulp's parent company, Paper Excellence.
On Thursday, the Houston government and Paper Excellence announced they had reached a deal that would end a $450-million lawsuit against the province. That deal included confirmation that Paper Excellence would not restart its Pictou County mill and a promise to undertake a feasibility study of a new pulp mill in Liverpool.

Atlantic whitefish are on the brink of extinction. Can a captive breeding program save them?
Scientists will implant tiny tracking tags in up to 200 captive-raised Atlantic whitefish this year as part of the effort to stave off extinction of one of Canada's most critically endangered species.
Three interconnected lakes behind the town of Bridgewater, N.S., are the only place on earth where this ancient relative of Atlantic salmon still survives in the wild.
The tagged fish will be released into the Petite Rivière watershed to locate spawning areas and to see if the fish have retained their natural instinct to go to the ocean.
