Youth Outlook is thrilled to announce a permanent tribute to one of our organization’s earliest and most foundational supporters: we are dedicating our annual Business Partner of the Year Award to him, naming it the Hal Temple Business Partner of the Year Award.

This dedication honors the monumental contributions of Hal Temple, whose commitment in 1998 allowed a fledgling QYC (now Youth Outlook) to transition from an idea into a fully functioning organization.

The Foundation of Youth Outlook

Hal Temple served as Chair of the Board of Directors in 1998 during a pivotal time. As the organization took its first steps, it was Hal who provided the foundation for our success:

  • Laying the Legal Groundwork: Hal personally ensured the agency's articles of incorporation were issued and completed the application for QYC’s 501(c)(3) status.

  • Hiring Our First Employee: When an unexpected grant made hiring a full-time Executive Director possible, Hal spearheaded the search committee and even offered his personal home as the site for the final in-person interview.

  • The Ultimate Show of Trust: When the organization faced the common startup challenge of waiting for its first state grant reimbursement, Hal quietly put up $15,000 of his own money to ensure the agency could meet payroll and operate safely through its first critical quarter.

A Legacy of Dedication

Hal’s service extended far beyond his terms as Board Chair. After serving for several years on the board, Hal transitioned to a dedicated volunteer, working directly with youth in our drop-in centers.

  • Opening New Doors: When attendance at our original center began to wane, Hal leveraged his personal network to secure our new location: the First Congregational Church of Glen Ellyn, which enthusiastically hosted our new drop-in center.

  • An Enduring Advocate: For years, Hal volunteered his time and continues today as one of Youth Outlook’s most consistent and long-term donors, making contributions through special events, operations, and multi-year pledges. He remains an active voice and champion for LGBTQ youth at DuPage PFLAG and in the community.

Twenty-seven years later, Youth Outlook stands as a thriving, long-standing non-profit business, a success that would not have been possible without Hal Temple’s generosity, leadership, and willingness to personally risk his own finances to get our feet under us.

It is our honor to ensure his legacy is recognized annually with the Hal Temple Business Partner of the Year Award. Thank you, Hal, for daring to believe in Youth Outlook from the very beginning.
