Boyne Thunder:
High-Octane Fun & Big-Hearted Giving

The Boyne Thunder powerboat poker run returns July 11 – 12, 2025, delivering adrenaline-pumping excitement and impactful fundraising for three local nonprofits—including Challenge Mountain.

“It’s hard to describe just how much Challenge Mountain programs benefit from Boyne Thunder’s generosity,” says Executive Director Elizabeth Gertz. “Their annual donation supports adaptive recreation like biking, skiing, fishing, equine therapy, and arts-based activities—plus so much more. We’re incredibly grateful!”

Now in its 22nd year, Boyne Thunder is built on a powerful mission: showcasing million-dollar, high-speed powerboats up close (ranging from 22 to 55 feet), raising funds for local causes, and spotlighting Boyne City and the greater northwest Michigan region.

In addition to the thrilling 150-mile poker run route—spanning from Elk Rapids to Harbor Springs and the many lake communities in between—Boyne Thunder also features a welcome party, Friday night street show, outdoor film screening, live music and a participant dinner.

Thank you to
volunteers, organizers, sponsors,
boaters and their crews
for all that you do!

Community, Connection & Music…
Under the Summer Sky

Challenge Mountain kicked off the Boyne City Evenings at the Gazebo Summer Music Series as proud sponsor of the June 25 concert featuring the Full Moon Jam Band! The night was filled with toe-tapping tunes and community spirit as Spirit Club participants joined in the fun—dancing, clapping and soaking up every note.

The band, which includes longtime Challenge Mountain volunteer and board member Bill Aten, brought a lively mix of mandolin, fiddle, harmonica and more.

Summer Programming:
Off to a Fun-Filled Start

Challenge Mountain’s summer programming is in full swing—kicking off the season with Summer Arts Sessions, Adaptive Fishing Adventures and the much-anticipated return of SPIRIT Day Camp, a participant favorite.

Since 1984, SPIRIT Day Camp has served as a summer haven for participants ages 13 and older, where outdoor recreation meets lasting friendships and community connection. From nature hikes and miniature golf at Pirate's Cove to music, arts, and golf with First Tee at Boyne Highlands, every day at camp brings new adventures that encourage personal growth, confidence and joy.

“For more than 40 years, SPIRIT Day Camp has been a beacon of joy and growth for our campers,” says Program Director Linda Armstrong. “It’s more than just a camp—it’s a community built on inclusion and adventure.”

Challenge Mountain’s mission to provide accessible, adaptive recreation wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of our supporters. Your continued giving helps ensure that every camper can thrive in a safe, welcoming space—thank you for making these moments of joy and discovery possible!
