Save the Date! - Andover Open Barns

Saturday, September 7, 2024

AndoverBarn.jpg

Enjoy a day of historic barns, scenic landscapes, and local history in the hills of central New Hampshire. The barns in Andover link us to the rich agricultural history of the area. Seven distinctive examples will be showcased on the self-guided barn tour on Saturday, September 7.

The event begins with an illustrated lecture, “The History of Agriculture as Told by Barns,” presented by author and barn expert John Porter at Proctor Academy’s Stone Church. A self-guided tour of the barns will follow. Experts will be available at each barn to answer questions about architectural features, agricultural uses, framing styles and repair methods.

The event is presented by the N.H. Preservation Alliance in association with the Andover Historical Society and The Andover Community Hub.  Registration will be available in the coming weeks.

A New Home of the Ioka Theater Marquee

We're sorry the marquee left the Ioka Theater in Exeter (Seven to Save, 2012), but very glad to see it revived and engaging new audiences.

Here it is at a new exhibit at the American Sign Museum in Cincinnati, OH.

The Ioka in Exeter has been repurposed into residential units.

Thank you to advocate Laurie A. Couture (pictured above) for her tremendous preservation efforts with this project and for her photos of the Ioka Marquee in its new home.

Celebrate Old Home Days in New Hampshire!

Old Home Days are celebrated in communities throughout New Hampshire and are a great way to meet your neighbors and learn about the history of your local community.  Do you have an Old Home Day happening near you?  We'd love to hear about it!

(emailed freedomFOHW@gmail.com to ask to use a photo from their website.

Check out this historic photo from an Old Home Day event in Tamworth, NH!

Did you know, Freedom is one of only several NH towns that celebrate an Old Home Week, as this idea was originally conceived, and their event starts this Friday (7/26).  Saturday there is a parade and a luncheon at the South Eaton Meetinghouse (one of our recent award winners). Plus fun all week, with walking tours, exhibits, hikes and paddles, and much more!

Browse the list at the bottom of our blog to find information on Old Home Days throughout the state.  Be sure to let us know if your community is missing from the list so we can add it. We're expanding our list to include additional information on the celebrations so let us know what your community has planned.  And don't forget to share photos of your celebration post event - we'd love to see them!

On social media be sure to use the tags #NHOldHomeDays and

Thank You to Everyone who Supported our End of Fiscal Year Campaign

bethlehem(3).JPG

Thank you to everyone who helped us reach our end of Fiscal Year fundraising goal!

Our image this past fundraising season of the "bathing beauties" at Bud's Bathhouse in Bethlehem was a reminder that preservation can be fun as well as complex or challenging. Your support will help us serve communities all over the state and help address issues like the housing and trades gaps.

We're currently working on selecting our image for the upcoming year so stay tuned!
