Dear Pam:
It is with a heavy heart that I let you know that Jen has decided to leave us later this month and return to the Manada Conservancy. We are exceedingly sorry to see her go and know you join us in wishing her the very best.
Yours in the Outdoors,
Marci J. Mowery, President
TRAINING
Two opportunities to complete the required chainsaw training for trail maintainers are coming up next month. First up, May 5th and 6th at French Creek State Park; then a second opportunity on May 9th and 10th at Greenwood Furnace. The two-day course will once again be taught by US Forest Service certified trainer Peter Jensen and his partner Carl Demrow.
The cost per person is $300; however, PPFF will subsidize $225 of the cost. This is a legitimate chapter expense. Check with your Friends board to see if they would be willing to pay the $75 difference.
Please sign up as soon as possible so that we can get all materials prepared for Peter and he knows how many packets of his materials to assemble for you.
DO
Last month we asked about inclusive playground equipment and response to our request for input through a quick survey was pretty dismal. Just a few quick questions that might help expand how we are able to remove barriers to fun for kids of all abilities. Please take a moment, especially Chairs, to click a few boxes at https://ppff.online/accessible-playgrounds.
KNOW
Several opportunities to "brand" a larger initiative are coming up this year, two of which were mentioned in Jen's social media tips for April sent last week.
First is #GetMovingPA, as PPFF encourages park and forest users to #hashtag their video and photo adventures over the course of several special days and weeks this year. Our intent is to capture lots of diverse and entertaining images. And share them, of course!
Second is #ILoveMyStateParks, part of a larger initiative being organized by the National Association of State Park Foundations, a nationwide organization of the statewide organizations like PPFF in other states.
We're doing a "soft launch" of LoveMyStateParks week this year, hoping to rebrand things that are already happening and add them to the roster of available activities, all with an eye to showcasing the outsized role state parks play across the nation.
Let's get together and talk about these ideas and maybe adding things that you're already doing during LoveMyStateParks week (Mother's Day through 5/15) to the roster.

KNOW TOO
As we are sure you are aware, an effort to dedicate American Rescue Plan funding to some of the infrastructure/maintenance backlog in our parks and forests is heating up. There is bipartisan support for this idea but, as you are probably also aware, "support" comes and goes during budget negotiations.
It occurred to me that it might be helpful for you to see/hear the presentation I do during one of our legislative tours (or guest appearances with the Secretary or other DCNR officials) so that you have a better idea of how we approach the issue and how you can add your voice effectively.
Join us in Zoom on April 19th (again, Tuesday) at 6:00 PM for this gathering.

For Earth Month, Leave No Trace is promoting a #LeaveNoTrash campaign. LNT suggests a couple posts and encouraging people to take the #LeaveNoTrash pledge to pick up 30 pieces of trash this month. Share #LeaveNoTrash pledge on social media and download this photo (one of many) to share.
