Unfortunately, the free coverage of the games is not equitable with the Olympics. We all need to keep advocating.

One of my favorite plays is Our Town written in 1938 by Thornton Wilder. For those who are unfamiliar, it's a fairly simplistic play about appreciating life. I was reminded of the play as one of my friends is battling cancer throughout his body. The cancer seems to have come upon him without any warning.

Me acordé de la obra porque uno de mis amigos está luchando contra el cáncer en todo su cuerpo. El cáncer parece haberle llegado sin previo aviso.

Our Town takes place in Grover's Corners, New Hampshire between 1901-13 and tells the stories of two families-the Webb's and the Gibbs. I love the story and appreciate how it portrays life. But I especially love the messages:

"We all know that something is eternal. There’s something way down deep that’s eternal about every human being.” Stage Manager in Act III.

Emily says the following in Act III after she has died and has come back to earth one more time:

“Let's really look at one another!...It goes so fast. We don't have time to look at one another. I didn't realize. So all that was going on and we never noticed...Oh, earth, you are too wonderful for anybody to realize you. Do any human beings ever realize life while they live it--every, every minute?"

"¡Miremos realmente unos a otros!... Todo pasa tan rápido. No tenemos tiempo para mirarnos unos a otros. No me di cuenta. Así que todo eso estaba pasando y nunca lo notamos... Oh, tierra, eres demasiado maravillosa para que alguien te comprenda. ¿Alguna vez los seres humanos comprenden la vida mientras la viven—cada, cada minuto?"

" In summarizing the play, the characters do not yet understand how brief life really is, and they spend the time going about their everyday lives, not leaving the town or fulfilling dreams they may have. Our Town also creates a theme of appreciating life. Because life is so brief, it's important that we don't waste it."

I know that in my very fast paced life, I rarely realize how wonderful it is to have life even with all of the suffering and challenges that I/we all face. I see people constantly "plugged-in" to their devices and know that they aren't aware of what's going on around them. I feel a lack of long-term empathy and integrity. I understand that we all have so much going on but how can we bridge this to truly see others. As I say to myself, "maybe it's just a matter of slowing down and looking really hard at life".

Sé que en mi vida tan acelerada, rara vez me doy cuenta de lo maravilloso que es tener vida, a pesar de todo el sufrimiento y los desafíos que yo/nosotros enfrentamos. Veo a la gente constantemente "conectada" a sus dispositivos y sé que no están conscientes de lo que ocurre a su alrededor. Siento una falta de empatía a largo plazo e integridad. Entiendo que todos tenemos mucho en nuestras vidas, pero ¿cómo podemos superar esto para realmente ver a los demás? It's worth reading the play and/or watching the 1940 movie. I hope that you get as much out of Our Town as I have.
