In Memoriam
Joseph Franklin Henderson 1933-2023
Joseph Franklin Henderson was born in 1933 in Miami, AZ. He was a man of varied interests-- from biochemistry, to family, to the liturgy of the Catholic Church.
He received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. from the University of Arizona and his Ph.D. in 1959 from the University of Wisconsin (Madison). After two years at Stanford Research and three years at George Washington Medical School, in 1963 Frank joined the faculty of Medicine in the Departments of Biochemistry and the McEachern Cancer Research Institute in Edmonton, an institution which had just been created by the National Cancer Institute of Canada. Frank taught biochemistry and supervised the graduate work of over a dozen students and the research of over 3 dozen Post Doctoral Fellows from all over the world. Frank's research in purine metabolism, diseases of purine metabolism the role of purine antagonists in cancer chemotherapy resulted in over 200 publications in major medical journals and two books on purine metabolism. In 1966 he received the Ayerst Award of the Canadian Biochemical Society and in 1969 an Outstanding Research Award from the International Federation of Rheumatic Diseases.
This was his first career. Retirement in 1989 gave him the opportunity to pursue his second, in liturgical studies. His focus was particularly on the changes to the Catholic liturgy made by Vatican II and the role of women in worship in the medieval church. He became a member of the North American Academy of Liturgy, editor of Proceedings, and recipient of the Berakah Award (1997). He also served as editor of the National Bulletin on Liturgy (Catholic Church of Canada), and on a variety of advisory committees on the Catholic liturgy.
Retirement also gave Frank and his wife, Ruth, occasion for much travel. They enjoyed hiking, music, active participation in their respective churches, ethnic restaurants and collecting cookbooks. She died after they had been married for 54 years.
Frank died at Our Parents' Home in Edmonton on January 28, 2023. He is survived by his brother, Mike, and sister-in-law, Pat of Scottsdale, AZ, and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family requests a donation to plant a memorial tree or to any charity of your choice.
May Frank rest in peace, and may his memory be for a blessing.
