Federal Shutdown & PA Budget Impasse
On October 1, the federal government shut down after congressional leaders and the White House failed to reach an agreement on spending. At this time, there is no indication that a compromise is near. The House remains in recess until next week, and the Senate plans to return this weekend for votes on short-term measures.
Key developments:
-
Two labor unions filed a lawsuit against the Office of Management and Budget, citing layoffs of federal workers during the shutdown.
-
Some federal workers have already received termination notices.
-
House Speaker Mike Johnson warned that “pain will be inflicted” during the shutdown, while the Administration announced a freeze on certain federal infrastructure funds.
The federal shutdown, happening alongside Pennsylvania’s state budget impasse, could be especially devastating for nonprofits across the Commonwealth and the people they serve. Pennsylvanians are already suffering - the number of children, seniors, job seekers, and others impacted will dramatically increase by the end of this month. PANO's Executive Director, Anne Gingerich, participated alongside several other agencies in a press conference at our capitol just this morning, October 2, to tell the story of the effects of the state budget impasse on those we've heard from via this survey.
