May Is National Bike Month!

May is National Bike Month, and Hawai‘i Bicycling League has a full calendar of rides, workshops, pau hanas, volunteer opportunities, and trike rides to celebrate cycling across Hawai‘i. Whether you’re a daily rider or just getting back on a bike, there’s something for everyone this month.

Bike Month Highlight: BikeFest @ SALT at Our Kaka‘ako

Hawai‘i Bicycling League will be taking over the BARN @ SALT at Our Kaka‘ako on Sunday, May 17th!

  • 12:00pm – 4:00pm Cycle Swap Meet
  • 2:00pm – 3:00pm Helmet Giveaway
  • 4:00pm – 5:30pm Bike Maintenance Workshop
  • 4:00pm – 6:30pm Pau Hana & Talk Story
Hunt down some deals at the swap meet, get a free helmet and some new bike maintenance knowledge, and celebrate after at Village Bottle Shop, where each pint sold of New Belgium Brewing's Ride Aloha Lager donates $1 to HBL.

Bike (and Trike) to the Train Is Back!

To round out Bike Month we're bringing Bike to the Train back on Sunday, May 31st. This year we're also adding 10 limited spots for people to Trike to the Train on our trike fleet! Whether you use two wheels or three, join us for a day full of multimodal fun on the Leeward Bikeway and the Oʻahu Railway Society's line.
2026 Honolulu Century Ride Registration Now Open

Registration is now open for the 2026 Honolulu Century Ride, Hawai‘i’s largest cycling event and HBL’s biggest fundraiser happening on Sunday, September 27th. Choose from 25, 50, 75, or 100 miles on a scenic route along O‘ahu’s South Shore (including a stretch of a car-free Kaiwi Coast) and up the Windward Coast all the while supporting safer streets and bike education programs statewide!

HBL Goes to D.C. For National Bike Summit

HBL represented Hawai’i at the 2026 National Bike Summit in Washington D.C. in late March and met with all four of the state’s congressional offices to discuss supporting federal reauthorization of important programs like Safe Streets For All and to highlight the need to continue supporting Complete Streets projects across the state. E-Bike Updates Moving Through Legislature

After more than two years of advocacy, education, and outreach Hawai‘i is poised to enact sweeping and foundational legislation regulating e-bikes and micro mobility devices. Read more about this bill and others we are tracking at the legislature in this update.

30 E-Bikes Distributed to Maui Fire Survivors

On Saturday April 11th, Hawaiʻi Bicycling League and its Maui Bicycling League chapter distributed 30 new Aventon e-bikes to survivors of the 2023 Maui Fires who still lack transportation options. Click here for a full event recap and photo gallery.

Was your bike route damaged in the Kona Low storms? If so, first report it to your County (on Oʻahu use the HNL 311 system) but then let HBL know by emailing bicycle@HBL.org. Pics are encouraged so we can track and advocate for bike system repair.

Did You Know?

What’s the recommended way nowadays to teach little ones how to bike? Toss out the training wheels, and while you’re at it, ditch the pedals too! Using balance bikes (also called striders or push bikes) allow keiki to truly develop their balance skills on the bike, setting them up for success when pedaling is added in. Read on ❯❯

HBL Dirt

HBL Dirt, a chapter of HBL, advocates for more sustainable off-road places to ride bicycles. In the recent months, HBL Dirt has been pulling together mountain bike advocates and groups statewide to develop a Statewide MTB Hui to advance topics such as DLNR relationships, share insight on insurance, and come together to strengthen the off-road riding community. Stay tuned for more ways to get involved!

MTB Kauai announces Youth Mountain Biking Summer Camp! Building a new generation of mountain bikers is core to MTB Kauai's mission. So we are now hosting our first-ever summer youth cycling camps.  Each week is limited to 12 campers. For more information or to register click here.

Hawaii Cycling Club joins the Ride of Silence presented in Kona by People for Active Transportation (PATH), on May 23. Cyclists worldwide will ride in a silent, slow-paced ride in honor of those who have been injured or killed while cycling on public roadways. More info here.
