Sustain DuPage is continuing our educational series on native plants and ecosystems led by botanist, and sustainability maverick, Pat Armstrong!  On April 21st at 1:30 there will be an outdoor interpretive walk in Black Partridge Woods, a designated Illinois Nature Preserve with bluffs overlooking the Des Plaines River, ravine forests, and spring-fed streams, that feature an impressive array of wildflowers.

Local Action Needed

Sustain DuPage has long been an advocate for backyard henkeeping and we support the group Hen Ellyn in their pursuit to make henkeeping legal in Glen Ellyn.  They are looking for like-minded citizens to attend the Village Board Workshop on April 15th at 7pm and present evidence and testimony about the benefits of Henkeeping.  You can also follow their Facebook group "Hen Ellyn" to stay on top of their latest news.

Summer Garden

It's that time of year again! Our workdays have started up for the spring and we're back in the garden on Saturday mornings and Wednesday evenings. For those who have never attended one of our workdays, it's free to participate and all levels of skill are welcome. Volunteers will get the chance to learn about sustainable gardening as they put those skills into practice in our quarter-acre communal market garden. Please note that this is an outdoor activity and we ask you dress appropriately for both the weather and the tasks at hand. We recommend closed-toe shoes (no sandals), clothes that can protect your skin from light abrasions (like from plant and gardening materials), and sun cover. Please note you might get dirty and that ticks have been found on the property. For those with bee allergies, we are located next to a honey yard, so please keep your safety in mind.

We keep a friendly, casual atmosphere and this is not a formal class or workshop. However, you will be learning a lot from the different types of gardeners we have participating. Just because we call them "workdays", your physical labor is not mandatory to participate; you are free to just enjoy the garden and socialize too! It's a great way to meet new people and get some time outdoors. Our one request for purely social visits is that the time and attention of the volunteers who are in "worker bee" mode is respected if they do not wish to be distracted from their tasks.

Garden workdays will automatically be considered cancelled if: There's rain, snow, hail, lightning, strong winds, extreme cold or hot weather, or very poor air quality. If you'd like to join our WhatsApp group to get updates for last minute notifications, please contact lindsayz@sustaindupage.com for the link. If you are interested in getting more of a workout, consider joining our Compost Crew!  You can contact stasiak@sustaindupage.com for the info. Our schedule can be found on our website calendar and in the event section below. See you in the garden!
