 BLACK HISTORY ROOTED IN PLANTS

Plant-focused cuisines have existed throughout Africa, Asia, and Latin America for centuries. Yet plant-based diets in the United States have been associated with whiteness and seem to be inaccessible for lower-income neighborhoods and among communities of color.

Black chefs today are shifting this narrative by offering more culturally resonant plant-powered meals. They are reimagining popular soul and comfort food dishes with both flavor and health in mind. By changing the food landscape we can promote health and well-being among Black communities that have been disproportionately affected by diabetes, hypertension, and other health conditions.

On the heels of our Health Freedom Walks honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., our Plant Powered community continues the celebration of Black culture, heritage, and foodways with Black History Month events in Harlem and Bushwick. Join us!

Green lineHealthy Hearts

Fusing Black History and American Heart Months — both celebrated in February — we’re drawing your attention to urgent health disparities in Black communities. Troubling data show that Black New Yorkers have by far the highest rates of early mortality from heart disease:

It doesn’t have to be this way! Plant-based nutrition has the power to turn these statistics around through both the prevention and reversal of heart disease.

Eat your greens and reduce oil intake. These are two top strategies for increasing healthy blood flow, recommended last night by Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, Jr., at our Heart to Healthy Heart livestream event. A celebrated plant-based physician who pioneered food-as-medicine for advanced cardiovascular disease, Dr. Esselstyn shared findings from his research applying low-fat, whole food, plant-based nutrition to heal his patients. Watch the replay of the interview:
