Human trafficking occurs every day across Illinois to children whose average age is 14. While it is true that any child can become a trafficking victim, some form of vulnerability tends to be a common thread (Polaris Project, 2014).
At Shelter, we are working to reduce trafficking by increasing our support and services to runaway youth and youth experiencing homelessness, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and young people in and aging out of the child welfare system.
We are also preparing to support female victims of human trafficking in a way no other organization in Illinois has ever done before by opening Illinois' first DCFS-licensed home for youth victims of human trafficking. This unique home will provide the physical safety, mental safety, and spiritual safety young women need to recover, heal, and live a life to their full potential.
If you or someone you know is a victim of human trafficking, we're here to provide the support you need.

Remembering Megan Geraghty Kontos It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of Megan Geraghty Kontos, President of Shelter's former Associate Board, on January 11. Megan was an extraordinary leader whose dedication, compassion, and vision greatly enriched Shelter and our community. Our thoughts are with Megan's family during this difficult time. Shelter has established a fund for donations made in Megan's memory. Complete obituary here.
Transitioning to Foster Care In December, we celebrated a milestone when one of our young clients transitioned to a foster home after spending nearly a year at our Buckholz Emergency Shelter. Our amazing staff, Mario and Ian, marked the occasion with a festive going-away party and dinner. Youth in our emergency shelters thrive through strong and trusting relationships with staff who help them heal from trauma. Foster families are essential in providing safe, stable, and nurturing environments for youth in need. To learn how you can become a foster parent, contact Christina Gaytan, Foster Care Director.

Your Support is Powerful Thank you to the many donors who supported our year-end fundraising through annual contributions, monthly giving, increased gifts, and first-time gifts!
Your investment in Shelter will expand our Clinical Program and bring hope and healing to children in crisis, young people experiencing homelessness, first-time parents in need of support, foster families, and others at-risk and in-need.
Clinical Director, Sarah Galla shares that the funds "will enable Shelter to hire and train new therapists, increase services, and most importantly, create a future where every child has access to the care they need to thrive."
