Water%20Conservation%20Banner%202.png

How much water does it take to grow our food? Plant foods are much less water-intensive than farmed animals because we not only water the animals but also water the plants that feed them. Scientists estimate that people who eat a plant-based diet use about 1/13 the water that omnivores use. Cornell researcher David Pimental and colleagues wrote:  "Approximately 1000 liters (L) of water are required to produce 1 kilogram (kg) of cereal grain, and 43,000 L to produce 1 kg of beef." Eating lower down on the food chain -- plants instead of animals – reduces our collective impact on our water systems.

Ethos%20Farm%20Banner%202.png

Next month, we’ll learn how healthy soil creates nutrient-dense plants and ultimately fuels our gut microbiome during our visit to Ethos Farm. The regenerative organic agriculture techniques used at Ethos Farm foster diverse microbial life in the soil, sequester carbon into the soil, and preserve water!

As we celebrate nature and a healthy microbiome, you'll hear more from Nora Pugliese, Ethos Farm Manager, alongside Ron Weiss, MD, founder of the Ethos Farm Project, and Gladis Zinati, PhD, from the Rodale Institute. Our day also includes shopping at the Doctor’s Farmer’s Market, a bring-your-own picnic, a culinary demo, and farm-fresh refreshments.
