Dear Members and Friends,
Summer is taking its last breath in the Northern Hemisphere, a fitting time to reflect on where we've been and to prepare for what's rising within the human soul now the outer light gives way to inner activity.
In Ann Arbor we've been experiencing powerful electrical storms and between power outages our focus is on preparing for October's annual conference (see below) and the next issue of being human magazine.
We hosted the Council of the Anthroposphical Society here at the Stone House in July, as well as an open house with members of the Great Lakes Branch and the Rudolf Steiner High School community. Together we braved the intense heat and smoke-filled atmosphere to hike the stretch of road we now call home, to learn about the indigenous tribes, abolitionists, and poets that were also drawn here through time.
While we're still settling in and sorting through our boxes, the work and presence of Ernst Katz is palpable, especially through the many gifts and treasures he gathered. These include two red leather memory books for capturing the life and activity of the anthroposophical community at 1923 Geddes Avenue. One of the books is filled with program announcements, photographs, letters, and mementos. The other, pictured above, was unused, kept in Ernst's storage cupboard, waiting for what he knew was yet to come.

Dr. Ernst Katz walked on from this life on September 2, 2009, in the month of Michael, directing all those who wished to give a memorial gift that they make a donation to the Mortgage Reduction Fund of the Rudolf Steiner High School of Ann Arbor. That the headquarters of the Society is now located on the campus of the high school feels very much in keeping with Ernst's interests and vision.
We are grateful to Virginia Sease for sharing these reminiscences of Ernst in this season of Michaelmas.
In 1923 Rudolf Steiner commented that to be festival creating requires an esoteric maturity, and that festival life is essential to our relationships with one another and with the spiritual world. With this in mind, our 2026 annual conference is designed to foster connection through an inspiring social sculpture activity with artist Emily Fecsko, a pre-conference event with author Gary Lamb, a celebration of the Threefold community at 100 through eurythmy, speech, painting, and drama, and nourishing meals (not to mention the lead lectures with Tom O'Keefe, Cliff Venho, and Megan Durney).

In the most recent issue of Anthroposophy Worldwide, the editors shared several alternative proposals to the constitution changes that have been put before the membership for a potential vote next year. Here, Charles has provided a comparison to the various proposals, to support a consideration of the best way forward.
Each year we offer online presentations aligned to our conference theme as preparation for being in community together. This year's theme Anthroposophy and America Now touches the role of the West in realizing the Whitsun community, an association of initiative takers aware of and supporting one another's activity, and aligned to the spiritual impulse of our time. In the words of Rudolf Steiner, the Anthroposophical Society is meant to be a core for everything good that is to come to humankind.1 Through these preparatory gatherings, we seek to augment the process of cultivating this core.

From the planning committee: The form of the individual lessons and the overall composition of the course of the First Class will once again stand before us in its full magnitude—in the building whose realization Rudolf Steiner worked toward until the very end.
