The Apprenticeship Maryland Program/Tech Jobs Rule (AMP/TJR) and the Dr. James A. NEWS: CSM’s Lakisha Ferebee, department chair and associate professor of cybersecurity, recently earned national recognition by placing eighth in the 2024 USC Cyber Challenge Learn-A-Thon Instructor Competition, hosted by Cisco Networking Academy. Among 248 participating instructors across the country, Ferebee stood out for her dedication to student engagement and excellence in cybersecurity education. The Learn-A-Thon is designed to immerse students and instructors in hands-on cybersecurity learning. Ferebee incorporated multiple learning modules into her curriculum, including Introduction to Cybersecurity, Networking Basics, Network Defense, and Cyber Threat Management. In total, 42 students participated across her combined classes.

NEWS: Leonardtown Rotary announces the winners of our 2025 Community Grants. Each organization has received $5,000 for projects that benefit our county by providing innovative services.

The Newtowne Players: Renovation to accommodate those in wheelchairs or otherwise in need of mobility assistance.

HOPE (Helpers Overcoming Problems Effectively): To improve the Food Pantry by installing a limited kitchen area, including building additional shelving.

 

August 1st -2nd, 202552nd Annual Governor's Cup Yacht Race - With a 68.6-nautical-mile main race course from Annapolis, three other race routes are available to area sailors, all finishing at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. The community is welcome to join in the activities planned on the College’s waterfront on Saturday, August 2, featuring food, music, and family fun.  Governor’s Cup Yacht Race

Friday, August 1 at 7 p.m. SMCM welcomes the return of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO), under the baton of Nicholas Hersh, to the Nancy R. & Norton T. Dodge Performing Arts Center. Open to the public, with tickets available under a “Pay-What-You-Wish” arrangement. The “Sunset Serenades” performance, representing the St. Mary’s County stop under the BSO’s “Music for Maryland” series, marks the return of the orchestra to SMCM. Featuring harpist Bridget Kibbey, the concert will include dance-inspired works from across Europe by Shostakovich, Tailleferre, Dvořák and Strauss. Tickets are going fast and are only available in advance, online.

 

NEWS: SMCM has appointed Stephen L. McDaniel, CFRE, as the interim vice president for institutional advancement and executive director of the St. Mary’s College of Maryland Foundation and Eileen Petula as interim vice president for business and chief financial officer.

August 23, 2025 |10:00 am - 2:00 pm Annual Day of Unity and Healing. This descendant-led event centers on shared history, healing, and education. The ceremony will begin at 10:00 am and will include a bell-ringing ceremony to honor the lives and sacrifices of those who came before us. More information and an exact schedule are coming soon. This event is free and open to all. Registration is requested, but not required.
