Loving In Action

As we have entered this last week of Advent, I've been reflecting on the many stories and images of Love in Action we have seen, read and heard this year. The churches of the Central District, the people who make up the churches of the Central District truly believe in love in action. Here are a couple of examples that we have not previously shared.

Greenwood UMC recently raised over $2,200 to clear school lunch debt for families whose children attend a nearby schol. Pastor Josh Lemons received a call from Isom Elementary's principal that several families had a combined school lunch debt of $723.89 and all of this debt was about to be turned over to a collections agency. Pastor Josh reached out to his congregation, and they responded! Thanks to Greenwood UMC, Isom Elementary now has a surplus in the School Lunch fund. May this prevent families who are struggling financially from facing the burden of school lunch debt.

A dedicated team from Meridian Street UMC has been walking alongside a family of eleven from Afghanistan for over a year. In August, the church receivied Exodus Refugee Imigration's Co-Sponsor of the Year award for their commitment to this family. As a co-sponsor, the team from Meridian Street have helped the family in countless ways. From helping them learn to navigate public transportation, grocery stores and social services agencies, to advocating with and for them in doctor offices and school registraions, to rallying congregants to donate all needed furnishings for their first apartment, to helping each family member learn English, to developing a permanent and caring relationship with the entire family.

We have seen so many more examples of Love in Action this year. To those who have volunteered at food pantries, have gleaned produce from local farms and farmers' markets, to those who have read to a child or had a child read to them, to those who have sat in silence with folks who were grieving, to those who have reached out in love to a stranger, to those who have welcomed those different from yourselves, to everyone who has given of your time, of your talents, of your treasure in order to uplift someone else, you have demonstrated love in action. Let us not cease to seek more ways to welcome, to serve and to love unconditionally.

We wish each of you all the hope, peace, joy and love of the Christmas season. Metro Ministries will be closed for the remainder of the year and will re-open on Monday, January 2.

In the coming year, we look forward to seeing more love in action, more examples of the hands and feet of Christ, of being like Jesus, and we look forward to sharing what we see!

Christmas Blessings, everyone!
