Dear Beloveds,

This fall, Unitarian Universalist Ministry for Earth is called to boldness and reverence.

Beginning on Indigenous People's Day, Indigenous leaders in front-line communities have galvanized over 1500 people to engage in civil disobedience in the capital of the United States, through the People vs. Fossil Fuels Week of Action, Oct. 11-15, in Washington, DC.

Among those risking arrest are dozens of Unitarians Universalist lay leaders and clergy.

In the words of Susan Leslie, the Unitarian Universalist Association’s Coalitions & Partnerships Organizer, “This is not a big rally, it is an action by thousands of people willing to risk arrest to stop ecological devastation, stop new fossil fuel projects, and transition to renewable energy as quickly as possible.”

The late Elandria Williams, beloved by so many, reminded us that in work for change, “Most of it is about relationships, to be honest.”

Our relationships to one another are on full display this fall.

1. Now through November 30, 2021, sign up to bring the documentary film Condor and Eagle to your congregation!

2. On October 18th, join “UUs4ClimateJustice,” an online rally to organize and inspire climate action to elevate change in the US!

3. On October 24th and October 28th, join concerned Unitarian Universalists to “Ground and Connect for COP26”!

See the newsletter below for much more, including updates from the BIPOC Caucus for Climate Justice and UU Young Adults for Climate Justice.

As the mystic and social prophet Howard Thurman once beckoned, “Look to the Growing Edge.”

In solidarity and faith,

Aly Tharp  & Daniel Lawlor

Co-Directors, Unitarian Universalist Ministry for Earth

P.S. Coming soon! Keep an eye out for a special email to announce our Spring for Change 2022, “Get Rooted, Get Ready.”

An appeal from Unitarian Universalist Young Adults for Climate Justice

“At the Unitarian Universalist General Assembly 2021, UU young adults submitted a Responsive Resolution on Divestment after learning about many of the UU Common Endowment Fund (UUCEF)’s immoral investments. The UUCEF currently owns shares totaling almost $4 million in banks that directly funded Enbridge (Line 3) and other fossil fuel companies. This Resolution passed with 80% of delegates voting for divestment. However, the resolution is non-binding and the work to actually divest the UUCEF from fossil fuels and human rights violations continues.

We invite you to join us in asking the UUCEF to make sure its investments reflect our UU values by signing and sharing our pledge, which right now focuses on asking that the fund and UU congregations immediately divest from banks that fund and provide loans to fossil fuel companies." - Zoë Johnston, Network Coordinator, UU Young Adults for Climate Justice

A PLANT-BASED RECIPE TO SHARE

October%202021.png

We are in a season of much candy. Whether “trick or treating” happens or not this year, you can create a special “treat” for you and your circle of care.

Healthy Snickers Bars from From My Bowl reminds us: “Making your own candy bars is actually pretty dang easy. The best part? There’s no preservatives, artificial colors, or any questionable ingredients.”

If candy isn’t exactly your preference, this delicious Pumpkin Seed recipe might be just right for the fall!
