Calls to Action

RCEN.jpeg
Sign onto Petition e-4673 for a federal Nature and Biodiversity Act!

RCEN member group, West Coast Environmental Law, along with Ecojustice and Greenpeace Canada, request your support in their efforts to demand stronger federal, provincial, and territorial biodiversity strategies and action.

"The legislation would ensure accountability for achieving Canada's goals and targets under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) signed in December 2022 at COP15.

The GBF sets binding international targets to, by 2030, halt human-induced extinction of known threatened species; protect at least 30 percent of terrestrial and marine areas; increase by 15 percent the area, connectivity and integrity of natural ecosystems; restore degraded ecosystems; and address other issues such as pollution and climate change."

Tell the Province to Stop Delaying the Coastal Protection Act!
"Nova Scotia has been waiting far too long for the Coastal Protection Act (CPA).

And yet, instead of making real progress on protecting our coast, the provincial government has further delayed action by releasing a public survey filled with broad, high-level, and often leading questions. This represents a complete disregard for the safety of Nova Scotians, and a failure to take the very first step in coastal climate adaptation: stop building in known risk areas!

The Ecology Action Centre has put together a submission to the province's survey, urging them to finally make good on their promise to implement the CPA. We need your voice to help amplify our message: click here to see our submission and make your own!"

Save Sandy Lake!

"Thank you to everyone who has already supported protecting Sandy Lake-Sackville River from a terrible housing plan. Thank you to all who have already posted lawn/deck/window signs and joined us in asking the NS Provincial Government to reverse the decision.
If you have not yet, please visit https://www.sandylakecoalition.ca/copy-of-about, from here you can easily send a letter to the Province, and request or print a yard sign. We especially need signs to go up outside of HRM - for more info, please email sandylakecampaign@gmail.com.

Lets hope that 2024 includes new hope for saving Sandy Lake!
All the Best to You in 2024, from the Sandy Lake Conservation Association and the Sandy Lake-Sackville River Regional Park Coalition!"

Nova Scotia Environmental News

  • Halifax students create winning micro-ecosystem for global ocean innovation challenge

A team of students from Halifax West High School who are passionate about science have created an award-winning micro-ecosystem that highlights the importance of maintaining our ocean species.

Grade 12 students Emma Creelman, Mayar Ibrabah and Sophia Mulak created "The Sea Hive" as a way to examine how one species can feed off the waste of another.

  • N.S. government announces more protected areas, strategy to reach 2030 target

The provincial government announced Wednesday that more land will be added to the Blue Mountain Birch Cove Lakes Wilderness near Halifax, shown in a file photo. It's part of 23 new designations to conserve more forest, water, wetlands, coastline and coastal habitats in Nova Scotia.

  • Atlantic halibut thrive in warming Maritime waters, study finds

Warming ocean temperatures caused by climate change will provide favourable conditions for Atlantic halibut, according to a new study, although what happens to their prey is uncertain.

A paper published in the journal FACETS links an exponential increase in Atlantic Canadian landings over the past decade to warming ocean temperatures and predicts that trend is likely to continue under low- and high-warming scenarios in coming decades.

  • Nova Scotia greenlights construction of new power lines to New Brunswick

Nova Scotia has granted environmental approval to the construction of new transmission lines to New Brunswick to increase grid capacity and help the two provinces transition from coal.

Nova Scotia Power intends to build a new 345-kilovolt transmission line from Onslow, N.S., to the New Brunswick border, and to upgrade the power substation in Onslow. The new line will have its own steel towers, running in parallel to an existing 96-kilometre line with the same capacity.

Nova Scotia Power submitted a plan for environmental approval in October. Tim Halman, the minister of environment and climate change, signed off on the project this week.

  • Nova Scotia outlines plan to support green hydrogen industry

Nova Scotia released its Green Hydrogen Action Plan on Friday, but environmentalists say the government should temper its enthusiasm to make sure the fledgling industry brings benefits to the province without causing collateral damage.

"We want to put a pathway forward for success," said Tory Rushton, Nova Scotia's minister of natural resources and renewables.

There is no green hydrogen being produced in Nova Scotia now, but two energy companies are vying to establish themselves in the province.
